I think that's the extent. Some random crackling from moving the mics (stealthy). Recording is a little "roomy" because of the location, and crowd is heavy in spots and quiet in some. Enjoy!

11/07/88 Nightingale Bar 0 I caught The Hour at Kenny's Castaways in the Village. Then I headed over to Nightingales (2nd Ave. @ 13th Street) to catch BT. This place was just a bar. The band set up in front of a mirror, parallel with the bar and there was about 8 feet between the band and the bar to dance if one chose to do so (though I don't think there was ever more than 4 or 5 people dancing, with me being one of them of course). I came in during their first set and taped as much as I could. The band played at ear damaging levels. After one song I remember John saying to Chan, "why don't we turn down some?" and they lowered the volume a little. Then they played a 2nd set. After the 2nd set Chris Barron began a solo set. I let my tape deck run and split with the band. Someone's girlfriend (I'm pretty sure it was John's) had an apartment around the corner and we walked up 4 flights of stairs or so to party there for a while. When we got back to the bar my equipment was still there, though the tape had run out. The band got behind Chris and started to play Cleopatra's Cat with him. This was followed by the rest of Blues Traveler's 3rd set. At some point I discovered that only one of my mics had been on (bummer, remember I had set up in a hurry). I therefore decided to dub the master down to a two channel, mono, 1st gen cassette using a splitter. When I did this I put the fragment of Chris Barron's solo set at the end of the 3rd BT set just for tape space reasons. Due to the tape running out it wasn't continuous anyway.

And an even bigger thanks for their loving care transfering and sharing these sources for all to enjoy. Both of these recordings were nothing short of spectacular. --------------------------------------------------------- Tech Notes FLAC were decoded to wave. Wavmerge was used to reassemble the tracks back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align & synch both sources. SF8.0 used to adjust the volume for the front, center, surround and LFE channels. SF8.0 was used for the EQ setting on all the sources post mixdown. Surcode CD Pro DTS was used to encode to DTS. - Mixed by dan@am-dig.com - FLAC conversion 19-MAR-2007 - Artwork by dan@am-dig.com 300dpi - For best results print at the highest resolution onto glossy photo paper. AUD2 had random between song crowd cheer portions cut out making allot extra work synching these sources. However, nothing important was missing and the end result is a recording that flows seamlessly, smooth and natural without any interruptions. --------------------------------------------------------- Multitrack Mixdown Settings Center Channel Mono Matrix Mix - 5db AUD1 -4db AUD2 -5.25db --------------------------------------------------------- More On DTS Today's audio standards are moving towards multi-channel sound like DTS, Dolby Digital and DVD-Audio. While the Audio-CD standard (Red Book) hasn't changed to accommodate these new sound formats, it is still possible to go around the specification and to put a 5.1 surround recording on a regular Audio-CD. To play a DTS-Audio-CD you must connect your DVD/CD player via a digital cable (optical or coaxial) to your DTS Dolby-Digital receiver. It is not 100% sure that your receiver will recognize a DTS-Audio-CD, so the first time you're trying to playback a DTS-Audio-CD you must do a test to determine if it can. Begin with the volume very low, start the disc and rise the volume gradually. NEVER listen to a DTS-Audio-CD through the analogue audio outputs of your CD/DVD player. Burning Instructions Burn them the absolute same way as you would burn any normal Audio-CD from FLAC files. --------------------------------------------------------- Additional Formats This show is available in the following formats: 1. The 2 AUD sources listed above. 2. CD-Audio AUD+AUD Matrix Mix at 16/44 3. CD-Audio 5.1 Surround Sound DTS-Audio-CD at 16/44 4. DVD-Audio AUD+AUD Matrix Mix at 24/48 5. DVD-Audio 5.1 Surround Sound at 16/44 (6 Channel x 16/44 - MLP Encoded)

I found them years ago on the net and do not have any way to properly credit. --------------------------------------------------------- Notes on the Source Material SBD (ShnID = 3908) Perfectly balanced and flawless DSBD recording and perfect transfer by David Gans. AUD (ShnID = 82801) Great sounding above average AUD. Nice balanced sound and a clean transfer. Approx 30 seconds missing in Sugaree, Let Mikey Sing and approx 15 seconds of Drums. Patch (ShnID = 3325) Nice sounding FOB that has a few spots that are overloaded. In the end I found that using the other AUD source alone in the mix resulted in a better outcome. Fortunately this source was able to patch the cuts found in the primery AUD recording. Patch was used for the above AUD source in Sugaree, Let Mikcey Sing and Drums. --------------------------------------------------------- Tech Notes FLAC/SHNs were decoded to wave. Wavemerge was used to reassemble the entire show back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align & synch all of the sources. CEP2.0 was used for the multitrack mixdown. This is a 60%-SBD, 40%-AUD1 mix. - Mixed by dan@am-dig.com - FLAC conversion done 24-MAY-2008 - Artwork at 300dpi by dan@am-dig.com - For best results print at the highest resolution onto glossy photo paper. Design for use in a 6CD multi case for both the July 2 and 3 shows. Also included is artwork for a clear double jewel case to hold each show individually. --------------------------------------------------------- Multitrack Mixdown Settings Stereo Matrix SBD -2.5db AUD -6db --------------------------------------------------------- Notes The entire show is seamless and can be burned to CD with any splits desired. Because there is a several second break after "I Will Take You Home" and before "Drums" I found that to be the best spot as not to cut any transisitions (like the usual drums > space). Plus this leaves us with 3 somewhat equal length CDs. Most between song tuning/crowd cheer was missing on the SBD source as well as a few spots on the AUD sources. As usual, a trememdous effort was made to have the between song flow sound as smooth and natural as possible. Several techniques were used to do this including volume adjustments, crossfades and borrowing crowd cheers from other portions of the recording.

Source CDs from David Gans, editing by BCP. Processing Notes by BCP: - Software used: Samplitude, Sound Forge, WaveLab, Audition 2.0 - I received this show mainly as one large FLAC file. Once I decoded it to WAV format, I performed a DC offset adjustment/correction. I then listened to the entire show to determine the degree of pitch correction required. There were several spots throughout the show (in the SBD) which were not consistent and therefore needed special attention (i.e. within one track the pitch would fluctuate slightly). Before I attempted any further processing, I used CDWav to track the show so I could work with separate files. After I corrected the pitch for the entire show (which was around 41 cents flat to begin with), I then patched in the AUD source for the beginning of the show. - I do not circulate ANY shows with noise reduction. I did not alter the EQ settings or perform any other 'remastering' processes with the audio files. Enjoy! Patch Info: - The sbd was missing all of Let it Rock and the first 3:38 of All By Myself. These were patched in from Steve Rolfe'S Sony ECM-99s stereo mic > Sony TC-152 MAC (Maxell UDs) > Nakamichi Dragon playback > ART DI/O > Digital Audio Labs Card Deluxe soundcard > Cool Edit 2000 > FLAC (shnid 34730). -Ben @ BCP Studios, 7/23/06 David Gans originally broadcast this material on the KPFA Marathon on January 28, 2006 and very graciously supplied a set of CDs for circulation. 09/18/02 Black Swan Pub CD-R/FLAC 2 A- Lineage: DAT(M)>CDR(1)>FLAC This show took place in a really small, narrow bar where only about 35 people attended. There was so much talking in back near the bar and sitting area that I decided to sit on the side of Juliana. This is why the recording has so much guitar in it because I'm sitting right next to her amp. The vocals are a little low because of this but I think the recording still sounds good and it came out a lot better this way then if I stood with everyone else, talking.

06/19/04 Amsterdam Arena CD-R/SHN 3 A Mike & The Mechanics were the opening act for Phil Collins. During the concert Holland played an important match in the European soccer championship. Holland scored twice in the first thirty minutes of the show/match, which explains the somewhat odd cheering in the middle of a song. Inspite of this Holland lost the game against Czech... The concert was in the Arena in Amsterdam, a soccer stadium capable of holding around 40.000 people. For the concert the stage was set up along the long side of the stadium, the sound benefited of this, though it still isn't the best concert venue around, to say it mildly. The recording turned out very nice though, I was pretty close to the stage.

03/12/88 Nectar's CD-R/SHN 1 A Set II ONLY *This recording is by no means perfect, though the sound quality is really good, *but I haven't heard anything else so until I can uncover something better, *this is all I have. Notes: -t04 3:27-3:34 level fluctuations -t05 1:53-1:54 level fluctuations -t06 diginoise at very beginning -t07 some minor skipping -t08 recording problems at end during banter (not narration) -t09 recording cuts at 8:21 - on all copies that I have seen -During very quiet sections, it seems that background music can be heard -- either there was music in the background at the show or the taper did not use a new tape, so there was bleeding from a previous recording. Who knows, maybe there is a lost recording underneath this show. :-) Show Notes: This was the first known live Gamehendge, complete with narration. The date is incorrect, though the correct date is not known. Actually, the members of Phish were, by accounts, at a Frank Zappa concert on the evening of March 12, 1988. Chronologically, the show contained the first known version of Tela and Forbin's, though the actual date of this show might be after their separate debuts (see May 21, 1988, where Trey calls Tela a debut)

The levels for the channels were also more than 4db "off-center". I tried as best as I could by making the appropiate gain changes and EQ adjustments to "center" the recording. The X-Noise process was used on this show, as an experiment on just how far I could push it, because it is an "adaptave" process when you have it set up correctly. I decided to see just how much I could try to get the highs as *crystal* as possible without introducing so much noise that it became unbearable. All the fades were done in a montage as 2 seperate stereo tracks. While I did try to adjust the hard volume fades on the master, not all could be properly adjusted and were just left as is. As for Disc 1, Track 7.....you'll have to ask them what they were thinking ;-) Mastering , editing and WAV > SHN were performed on REBA by Arty-imthemarmar@stny.rr.com (on 10/2003) **24/48 Masters do exist at the unedited/pre-processed level**

The first step was to correct some anomolies in the original recording. There were small volume reductions in the left channel (a dirty spot on a record head maybe?) for all of Suzy Greenberg & Uncle Penn. After several approaches I decided to create a dual-mono mix of the right channel. There was another noteable change towards the front of Bouncin' and into the quiet section of Divided Sky. The tonal change was compensated for w/ the BBE Sonic Maximizer, with the settings @ 2 for Lo Contour and 3 for Process. The next step was to use Waves X-Noise on each seperate file and render each seperately. The files were loaded into Wavelab's Audio Montage, crossfades were performed at each tape flip and the following mastering processes were applied: Waves 2-band EQ, high pass @ 40Hz, Blue Tubes FA770 compressor, BBE Sonic Maximizer (Lo Contour = 3, Process = 3), Blue Tubes LM2S limiter. The resulting .WAV was tracked in CD-WAV and converted to SHNv3 (seek tables appended). (transfer>24bit FLAC files by Weave - Weave@furthurnet.org on 10/5/2003) Notes Outdoor show. Cut short due to rain. * Soundcheck has "and my dear Marley" lyrics in Sweet Adeline. Funky Bitch has some really strange lyrics...I mean really strange..... **Mastering Notes** This show has many technical difficulties to begin with. I did my best to soften these harsh cuts with some softer crossfades when at all possible. Because of the rain at the gig, there are many sound problems...and probably why there are so many cuts on the tape. The show contains small digizaps and some weird mixing at the start. It evens out, and I only went after the real loud zaps (assuming that it's the water messing with the equipment)....Also, towards the end of the set the volume jumps up suddenly and creates a whole mess of distortion. I lowered the volume of the set from SOAM onward, but the distortion is still there and nothing can be done about it. I tried as best as I could to soften the distortion without causing "too much" damage to the wanted material. 24/48 FLAC > REBA > Wavelab > Volume Adjustments > Steinberg Free Filter > BBE > 192kHz resampler > L1+ > Tracking > SHNv3 appended Mastering , editing and WAV > SHN were performed on REBA by Arty- imthemarmar@stny.rr.com (on 11/2003) **24/48 Masters do exist at the unedited/pre-processed level** Seeded to FurthurNet (www.furthurnet.org) by Marmar

Patches from the Sony mic source occur in the following places: Approx. 55 seconds into Landlady there was a dropout (patched for 5 seconds). After Funky Bitch there was a cut/dropout in the crowd noise (patched until first notes of Stash). Following Lawn Boy there was a tapeflip and the Tweezer intro was cut (patched from first notes of Tweezer for about 9 seconds). During Lizards, the Nak source was cut right after the "woah, woah" section, before the quiet building section (patched until the end of show). I smoothed out level changes in Stash, Tube, and McGrupp > HYHU with vector based volume curves. The following mastering processes were used: Waves REQ 2-band, rolloff at 42Hz, Blue Tubes FA770 compression, BBE Sonic Maximizer and the Waves L2. The audio was downsampled to 44.1 with the 192KHz Stereo Resampler, and rendered to 16-bits with UVHR22 dithering. The tapeflips were smoothed with crossfades (try and find the one in the YEM vocal jam!), there was also a small drop out fixed during the YEM vocal jam. There was a level change in Highway to Hell which I fixed with vector-based volume control. Tape was stopped between the last tune and encore, I smoothed this out with a long crossfade. The 24/48 FLACs were converted to .WAV and opened in the Wavelab Audio Montage, all edits were performed at the 24/48 stage. The following mastering processes were used: Waves REQ 2-band, rolloff at 42Hz, Blue Tubes FA770 compression, BBE Sonic Maximizer and the Waves L2. For the tuning and first minute of Buried Alive I adjusted volume (gain from the FA770) and bass levels (BBE lo contour) to make it somewhat listenable, there is a tiny crossfade at the switch point to make it smooth. The tape was stopped in Wilson, it picks back up almost right away, I deleted the blank spot and bumped the 2 sections together. There is a crossfade in Landlady to cover the tapeflip. The tape flip right after Coil before Tweezer was quick, you can't tell it's there with the crossfade in place. The final tapeflip after Bouncin' cut no music, only crowd noise. 2dB was added to the second set to match the levels from the first. The following mastering processes were rendered: Waves REQ (rolloff @ 40Hz), FA770 Compressor, BBE Sonic Maximizer (0.5, 2.5, -1), Waves L2 Ultramaximzer. Durring The Landlady, there is a dropout that was x-faded and there is some noise that can not be edited. In Destiny Unbound, there were a few pops from the instruments that were edited out. There is also what appears to be a very sudden pause in the tape durring Uncle Pen. Other than that, this show is absolutely amazing in sound quality. It still has some of the "tape" characteristics to it, but it just wouldn't sound right otherwise.

10/07/90 Club Bene CD-R/SHN 2 OK This show as received had lots of flaws. There are missing sections between some songs I can't do anything about. Lots of tracks were cut wrong and were merged with CoolEdit then recut with CDWave. There's a major dropout in La Grange. The silent section is obviously the wrong length but I left that alone. There were various other smaller things that were done before running the whole thing through shntool to fix sector boundaries. I hope you enjoy the less than perfect results. bmitchel@citlink.net

03/31/93 Roseland Theater SHN 0 A The original seed of this show did not include David Bowie. I have since found it and added it to the correct spot, the 1st track on Disc 2. This means that the rest of the tracks on Disc 2 had to be moved up one slot and YEM -> Vocal Jam was moved to the beginning of Disc 3 (which is probably where it belonged anyway). This is a great show. I sought it out for a long time after reading an excellent review of the Hood. Indeed you can definitely feel good about this Hood, as well as the rest of the show. As of now (11/2000) it seems to me that it is rather underrated and not circulated much at all. The sound quality is EXCELLENT. It is about as good as audience recordings get. If I didn't know better I might even think it was a SBD/AUD mix. Some of these tracks had flaws which I corrected in Cool Edit 2000. I am pretty sure most circulating CDR copies of this show had these flaws because I obtained the show from a different trader to be sure and it was the same. Here is a summary of what was done: -Track 5 on Disc 1 (Mound) had three gaps of approximately 0.5 seconds each. These were at 4:58-9 and 5:08-9. Removed. -Track 1 on Disc 2 (Lengthwise) had some clicks and pops at 0:10-11, 0:30, and 1:23-24. These were removed or minimized to the best of my ability. -Track 4 on Disc 3 (AC/DC Bag) had static at 3:35. Removed. Also the last track, Sweet Adeline, has quite a bit of hiss and is rather flaky overall. It's really too much to fix, especially for an acapella track, so I decided to leave it as is. Sounds like it is a different source and possibly more than one source patched together. -Carl carl_ivar@yahoo.com

Detailed info: This was the seed for the phish.net tree in early 1994; see google files (txt) contained in this file set for more info. During this show there was occasional distortion in one of the drum channels--due to either a mic or mixer. This is present in all versions of the show, as it came through the PA. This same noise is also present in the 8/20/93 Red Rocks SBD. Minor Edits: Fades in/out beg/end of sets--5 sec in all cases All of the below was done at the 48k level, so there are edited and unedited 48k archive .sl* as possible without introducing so much noise that it became unbearable.

06/09/94 Triad Amphitheater SHN 2 A Show Notes: Ginseng Sullivan was performed acoustic without microphones. Source Notes: I'm not 100% sure on the source of these discs but this is what the person I got them from thought they were, although they weren't positive. This is the only source I've seen circulating so it is probably true. Some have a Lunatec V2 listed as a preamp but I didn't include that in the lineage because I don't have any real evidence to support this. In any case, the show sounds pretty good and seems to be problem free so I hope we can look past the uncertain source info. Tech Notes: I extracted the cds as a range and resplit the tracks using CDWAV. The EAC logs for each disc are included. There was one fade between discs that I removed. There was enough overlapping music allowing me to join the 2 tracks together and resplit them without any fade. There was also a fade that eliminated some crowd noise between the second set and encore that I left in. I also added fades at the beginning and end of each set in soundforge. No other processing was done on my part except for running the fileset through shntool in order to remove SBE's that existed

08/17/96 Plattsburgh Air Force Base CD-R/SHN 3 A All Editing done in the digital domain using Steinberg Wavelab 4.0f, CubaseVST/32 5.1 **NOTES** I previously seeded this show in 2000, and after reading some of the user comments I was compelled to do a re-seed of this show. After listening real carefully and comparing the SBD portion to 3 different FMSBD sources, I have concluded that the soundboard portion is "flat" or runs slower than the FM source. So, from the point where it changes in PYITE > Golgi & all of disc 3 I took tuning measurements and discovered the DSBD was flat by 20cents. The pitch correction was done in Wavelab using the highest quality settings possible. Then PYITE was missing the fist minute from the DAT I had due to the taper "patching in" to the SBD feed from the Pre-FM source. The missing portion of Suzie was also repaired using the DAUD DAT I got my hands on. All edits were performed AFTER the DC Offset was removed from all material. The Slave came from Morgan Bell, who was nice enough to send me the FM source to use. The levels of Slave had to be adjusted to match the DSBD material. The Slave was edited in using exacting methods I would rather not go into here...the main changes are level reduction, DC Offset removal, and slight dithering. So here it is...after 80+hrs of listening and relistening, the best source available for this show IMHO.
