After he folded Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons in 1983, lead singer Joe Camilleri (aka Joey Vincent) decided to go back to basics and form a band that could play the zydeco, r&b and soul that he was so heavily influenced by. Joe had no real hopes for the Black Sorrows, in fact only 500 copies of the first album ?Senola? were initially pressed. Prior to the second album being released, White Records got involved and organised distribution for Senola and the second album ?Rockin? Zydeco?. Both these albums contained covers, but the third album ?A Place In The Sun? was all originals by Joe Camilleri & Nick Smith with the exception of one cover. By 1987 Camilleri and Smith had a strong set of songs that would become the 4th album ?Dear Children?. When CBS stepped in and arranged a distribution deal for the new album, things were looking good and Dear Children reached the Top Twenty. The album had been made mainly by session players so a live band needed to be organised. Nick Smith wasn?t interested in touring but Tongan born sisters Linda and Vika Bull were, and when they joined the band and then sang on the fifth album ?Hold On To Me? they provided what is generally regarded as the ?classic? Sorrows sound. Hold On To Me would remain in the Australian charts for over a year, spawn three hit singles and chart respectably overseas. Following the Hold On To Me tour (from which this show comes) the band recorded two more albums ?Harley & Rose? in 1990 and ?Better Times? in 1992 before Joe was ready for something different and the Bull sisters decided to pursue a solo career of their own. This is a really superb performance.
