Little Richard medley: Good Golly Miss Molly > Rip It Up
Reddy Teddy took their name from the Little Richard tune and were one of Boston's favorite power-pop bands from 1972 into the mid-late 70s, compared by rock-press critics to the New York Dolls, Badfinger, early Who and the like.
They released one of the earliest of Boston's DIY LPs on Spoonfed Records in 1976, mostly produced by WBCN's Maxanne Sartori and Boston's Wille "Loco" Alexander, and in 1977 were called by Playboy Magazine "possibly the best new American band, period."
They broke up when a record company deal fell through not long after this recording was made - their last show was opening for Van Halen at The Paradise in Boston in the Spring of 1978, just weeks before Van Halen's first single "You really Got Me" charted.
Their guitarist/founder Matthew MacKenzie left Boston for New York, where he briefly worked with Richard Lloyd of Television, he then returned to Boston to join John Felice (Real Kids) in Felice's new band the Taxi Boys.
After pursuing several other projects through the 1980s, Matthew died from injuries sustained in a 1988 car crash.
The surviving members went on to various other projects, most notably Scott Baerenwald, who was/is bassist for Robin Lane and the Chartbusters.
In 2004 Reddy Teddy began doing some reunion shows and were formally re-formed in 2006.
