Return to The Taper's Database Music List for Chuck Rothofsky
Last Update: December 31, 1969
Show Count: 649

Trading Rules:

My Current Setup:
Audio Extraction - EAC
Audio Burning: Goldenhawk CDRWin (8X)
SHN Burning: CD Creator (8X, 12X)

My Tech Specs:
AMD K6-3D
256MB Ram
Plextor 12x4x32

This is a listing of all of my archived SHN's Only. Keep that in mind. If you want Audio discs the Media count will most likely CHANGE. I have not included Audio discs, to simplify my list.

Contact me with any questions:
AOLIM: hazystare420
YahooIM: hazystare or carothofsky
ICQ: 2552190

I prefer to e-trade for archived SHN files whenever possible. DO NOT convert SHN to Audio then back to SHN (at least for me, as I would like the MD5's to match up to what is in the db.etreedb.org)!

However I will not turn down trades for Audio files, if thats all there is and there are NO SHN files in existence.

For Audio I burn ONLY in DAO and ask that you do the same. On any trades if there are issues with the show(s) requested I will let you know before I begin the trade and I ask that you please do the same.

Any pops, clicks, TAO or any other issues should be brought up before the trade commences. I prefer to trade for digital sources whenever possible and request that all source and transfer information be provided.

I have absolutely NO INTEREST in MP3 sourced CDR's so if they come from MP3's just let me know and I will try to find something else to keep the trade going or we can work out a B&P or something.

ALL B&P's MUST follow the rules from http://www.mcnichol.com/bnp/. (Failure to follow the rules can result in you receiving your discs back BLANK)

Enough of this for now, lets get to the shows.....

1 S A Schoeps MK4 > VMS01 > SMB1 > M1 The sound guy took a good 15 minutes to notice that the bass guitar was feeding back in the mains plus there's occasional wind rumble. I ran the tape through the Mackie to compensate and balance the low end. Before you flame me, consider that I have a real good ear for music, mix live sound semi-professionally and was gentle with the EQ. I'm normally a genuine digit head and tend to lament a single flipped bit. Enjoy this great show!

2 S A WBOTB:7" 2-track Betty Reel w/ dolby A @ 7 1/2 ips > PCM501ES @ 44.056 KHz PCM501ES analog out > dolby A decoder > analog in Fostex D5 @ 48KHz > DATx3 From Source: This is What Became Of The Bettys Source. I cleaned up the interference in the form of an annoying whine in the same manner as I did other Port Chester shows (2/18,2/21,2/23,2/24). However, I used two different programs to do so. For disks 1 and 2, I used Diamond Cut Audio Restorations Tools Notch Filter, with a filter width of 0.03 to 0.04 octaves, centered on ~8000 Hz, or wherever the whine happened to be. I used Sound Forge Noise Reduction Plugin, centering on the whine, for disc 3. Why two different programs? I began work on this show about a month ago. I recently purchased the DCART program after hearing it being widely regarded as one of the best (affordable) programs out there for cleaning up audio. Let your ears judge which is best if you can tell the difference. I found the DCART notch filter to be the better tool for the job, while the SFNR plugin is flexible enough to be used as a notch filter. I also realized long after I was into cleaning this show up that others have done so before me on this particular show. I'd be interested in any feedback as to how my show compares to other efforts! I used the narrowest filters I could without going bonkers. In some sections of the show the whine wandered quickly, forcing me to use lots of different filters over a small portion of the show. The flip chop in Scarlet is expertly patched with excellent AUD. It very markedly upgrades the copy that came around a year or so ago, as well as all other circulating copies. Until and unless they release this as a Dick's Picks, and do as good or better a job than we have with the patch, this is the ultimate copy of this alltime great show, hands down, no shit.

1 S A AKG se300b/ck91 -> PS-2 -> transformers -> mod SBM-1 -> D8 (@44.1kHz) notes about recording setup: The mics were run XY at 90 degrees, and the stand was somewhere between 7 and 8 feet high. This was a very small venue, holding only 230 people. There were two other taping rigs on the balcony directly above and slightly behind me, but I was the only rig down on the floor. The transformers used between the PS-2 and mod SBM-1 have a rating of 600:30k ohms. They are RadioShack transformers, and provide 10.2 dB gain when used with my recording equipment. They were used because I don't own a pre-amp yet. The mod SBM-1 has been modified by Doug Oade, and is his complete line stage rebuild modification.

The first minute or so of the show exhibits lots of noise/distortion - Keller's soundguy had some inappropriate settings on his DA-P1. It's clipping at <100% volume. 2 S A+ SBD > DAT SHN transfer by Miner Gleason (starwolf@ipass.net). I don't know the history of the original DAT-to-CDR transfer, but the discs I received in trade sometime back were very clean. Audio extraction was via a Plextor PX-32TS reader using EAC V0.85 beta. Cool Edit Pro was used to normalize (the levels on the original CDRs were a bit low), and to remove the 2 minor clicks that were on my original CDRs. The tracks were then split out using CDRWav. Possible flaw (not confirmed on originals): disk2 track1 (thelover) skips for like half a second at 4:47

The effect makes this sound like AUD at this point and causes some overproduction, but the source is the same I promise! If you listen closely you can hear the gradual change. This lasts through the end of the set (d2t01). Start of set 2 the sound returns to normal.

2 S A MUPPET05 after a 32-bit-conversion, I equalized the recording. With multiband-compression I gave the mix just a bit more balls. After that some additional equalization was done. Also, the subharmonic frequencies were removed. Two or three tiny errors were corrected. The only error still present is about half a minute of slight static noise 5 minutes into Biko. It's not really that annoying though. Finally, the recording was normalized.

1 S A Aud > cass/2 > DAT -Originally Mislabeled 11/3/1983 Live taping has been going since the band's second show, 11/3/83. Shelly Culbertson said of the first gig, "Nope, that show was not recorded. However, their next show - 11/3/84, basement of Slade Hall, UVM - was; I think it was taped on a boom box with condenser mics and the tape is entirely over-saturated and distorted. The tape was labeled with felt tip on masking tape and appears to have resided on someone's car floor or dashboard for a few years.

2 S A SBD>CASS(0)>DAT 885MB This show has been on a journey through the Cool Edit. Using the Noise Reduction Feature, I have removed 2/3 of the hiss from this copy. There is still a little bit of hiss, but it comes and goes in waves instead of a constant annoyance. Before I did this, the hiss was over the music, now it is behind it. The music was left completely unaltered in this process.

2 S A cass>NAD 6300 tape deck Few Minor issues because of an Analog tape, but great for the era.I dumped this show into my pc from the original VERY HISSY LOW LEVEL cassette and cleaned it up with SOUNDFORGE's Noise Reduction feature - basically just measured the hiss and removed it from the whole file after many less-than-successful attempts at getting a good EQ with various plug-in's. It helped ALOT and made this show much more listenable, but did create sort of a weird sonic by-product too, esp. during cymbal-heavy sections of the songs.

1 S A- SBD > Cass/0 > DAT *This recording is by no means perfect, though the sound quality is really good,*but I haven't heard anything else so until I can uncover something better, *this is all I have. Notes:-t04 3:27-3:34 level fluctuations -t05 1:53-1:54 level fluctuations -t06 diginoise at very beginning -t07 some minor skipping -t08 recording problems at end during banter (not narration)-t09 recording cuts at 8:21 - on all copies that I have seen-During very quiet sections, it seems that background music can be heard -- either there was music in the background at the show or the taper did not use a new tape, so there was bleeding from a previous recording. Who knows, maybe there is a lost recording underneath this show. :-) Fixes:-Applied SF4.5 Pitch Shift at a setting of -80 cents to all tracks to compensate for the sped up recording.-Retracked entire show so the beginning of the music starts at the beginning of each track.

There was a third set to this show, but the taper's ride needed to leave after the second set, so unfortunately this is all we have, and the rest is history. This Source was encoded with Dolby C when it mastered onto cassette, that means you ideally play it back (decode) with Dolby C. 1 S A SBD(?) > Cass/1 > D8 Was originally Mislabeled 5/21/1988 -Each disc was normalized to 98%. -Retracked both discs so that the start of the song appeared at the start of each track. -There were a few instances where there was no right channel sound or the right channel would have sound/static for a few seconds, then drop out, then come back in as sound/static. This was fixed by mixing the left channel, which was normal, onto the right channel. Even though this is not PCP-compliant, the tracks were not listenable to during these periods until the fixes were made. This occurred... 0:00-1:30 d1t1 Harry Hood 8:38-9:21 d2t2 Dazed and Confused 0:00-1:12 d2t3 The Sloth -There was some nasty static for about a second at the very beginning of Divided Sky that I did my best to smooth/edit out but it was a lost cause. I decided to cut out that portion in order to not distract from the rest of the show. The transition is not noticeable at all.

The taper sometimes put the Encore at the end of Cassette 1 if space was running low on Cassette 2. However, he also started Set 2 on cassette 1 if there was still plenty of room. Listening to the tapes, it is clear that Contact is the Encore and Antelope ends the 2nd set. 24bit/48kHz FLAC's > Wavelab 4.01b on REBA > Q10Paramatric EQ > BBE > X-Noise > Editing > L1+ Ultramaximizer > 48kHz>44.1 and 24bit>16bit w/level 2 Gaussian Dither > tc electronic Finalizer 96k > Tracking in Wavelab > SHNv3 appended There is some low level tape hiss/PA white noise that is on the masters...this did get amplified somewhat because of the level changes made durring the show. The levels for the channels were also more than 4db "off-center". I tried as best as I could by making the appropiate gain changes and EQ adjustments to "center" the recording. The X-Noise process was used on this show, as an experiment on just how far I could push it, because it is an "adaptave" process when you have it set up correctly. I decided to see just how much I could try to get the highs as *crystal* as possible without introducing so much noise that it became unbearable. All the fades were done in a montage as 2 seperate stereo tracks. While I did try to adjust the hard volume fades on the master, not all could be properly adjusted and were just left as is.

I transferred the PCM, removed the DC offset, converted from 44.056Khz to 44.1Khz at the highest quality setting, tracked, and burned this show on July 30, 2003. I am not sure of the difference but the Consumer Audio Discs always seem to extract slower and "report errors" however, I every time I listened there was zero difference in sound or major spikes or drops, even when looking at it in SoundForge.

1 S A SBD 495MB * The "Copenhagen We Be Shakin" bootleg cd contained about 10 glitches. The glitches were mostly added data, not erased data, so this wasn't too difficult to clean.

1 S A Schoeps CMC641 > OADE > DAP1 Trey Anastasio and the Vermont Youth Orchestra Note with SHNs: I received this in audio (no shns, I was told). It sounds pretty good, but had VERY loud clapping and by badly tracked. I pieced the show back together and retracked using my common sense. I then lower the DBs on the loud clapping segments to make for a smoother listen. All digital editing was done with Cool Edit Pro. I think this show sound great in contrast to the difficult nature of capturing an orchestral performance.

Vida Blue is Page McConnell of Phish, Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers Band, and Russell Batiste of the Funky Meters. Midnight was celebrated with KISS-like pyrotechnics and a balloon drop. Page did not play on "America the Beautiful"; Oteil dedicated the song to New York because "they'd been through a lot this year." "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" featured Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon of Phish, both playing Languedoc guitars (Mike on a new one recently built for him by Paul, and Trey on the older, butterscotch colored one of his). Phish lighting director Chris Kuroda manned the light board, and Phish soundman Paul Languedoc served as front- of-house engineer

1 S A vinyl->DAT WSP Single Recorded at Panoramic Recording Studio, Arnoldsville, GA there is some minor vocal distortion throughout both songs. it's on the original seed as well, but it's masked by the crackles. pulling the pops and crackles out cleaned them up quite nicely, especially considering the vinyl heritage. Mastering: Ben Blank recording studio, eac,wav and shn transfer by jeff miller Known Flaws: Blackout is missing at the end of set 1(not a tragedy). Drums pt. 1 fades out and then back in on d2 due to analog tape flip. Out of papas, the beginning bass riffs of MSTM start, then fade, then fade back in to MSTM before it starts. This was edited this way to fit on two disks. All of the fades are very clean and not annoying. Notes: -CD2 requires a 80 min disk. -Drums 1: Very Short -Drums 2: Sunny never stopped playing between MSTM & the encore, Mr. Soul. (as with many other songs as well, listen closely as sunny plays and plays and plays!) JB mumbles something about sunny right before they start Mr. soul, but I can't understand what he says, but I think he was poking fun at him. -On the original, the Encore was moved to end of cd 1 so it show would fit on two disks, for this SHN version, I reorganized the tracks to preserve the flow of the show.
