complete as per Deadlists. My CD is a copy of the CD that is going around on
BUDD and elsewhere. I edited an overlap splice at 22:15 (there were about 10
seconds of overlap on the old copy) and appended the last 12:25 of Caution
starting at 24:40 of the entire suite, which
were missing on that copy, from an old but only slightly inferior sounding tape

First Set onlyThis recording was rather distant from the source, and may therefore be more useful to collections for historical value. Only the first few notes of Dire Wolf and Dark Star are missing. The acoustic set may be complete, though the electric set is certainly missing songs after the jam and possibly before and after Dire Wolf. There is occasional tape flutter during the recording. Sound Forge was used to normalize, correct the pitch, and smooth some blemishes. and smooth some blemishes. |

mkw notes:
---> I moved Casey Jones D2 to D1. While the file names within the
md5 files have changed, the md5 signatures themselves have not.
---> This recording is afflicted with a dozen or two very brief
(tenths of seconds) PCM dropouts. While that is unfortunate,
this appears to be the best recording of 4/24/71 in circulation.
---> Good Lovin' is *not* cut (contrary to deadbase)

Editing and mastering by The Wizard - Owenbrothersvault@hotmail.com
When this one came to me it was a bit muddy, good bit hissy
FM recording. I first used a couple of different Continuous Noise
filters to reduce hiss. Then it was EQ'ed to bring up the top end a bit.
A few gain adjustments were made, cuts cleaned up and misc. flaws
corrected or minimized
All editing done with Diamond Cut DC5 Software.

Cuts in Playing In The Band and Good Lovin' as per Deadlists
"contrary to deadlists this sounds shitty again..but yeah what the heck...
by now if you listen to this run day by day you have gotten to a level of
abstraction you easily imagine a better sound. if you sit thru this evening
you will get a great good lovin (honestly it's a monster) some 25 min of it
and it tells the one to come in europe 72"
(Uli Teute)
Some of the quieter songs are actually quite listenable, but factors
such as the overwhelming bass distortion make much of the show
plainly unlistenable. Really, don't download this unless you are sure
you want to. Uli's remark about the "level of abstraction" really hits
the nail on its head. I am seeding this primarily as an "interim version"
and possible source of patch material when the soundboard tape makes an
appearance.

This is an audience recording that requires serious efforts to listen to.
Garcia plays pedal steel on Looks Like Rain.
El Paso cut at 0:51
Sugaree cuts off
The Other One cuts off
"last nite at the academy of music ...again we have to be satisfied with a
mediocre aud-rec.. it is very much complete, even up to the painful annoying
moments of tuning before each song...but a few funny remarks by the band are
hidden in these " dead-air-portions" (watch out for phil before Brokedown) the
original taper struggled with levels throu-out the 1st set, resulting in some
overrecorded parts (this is not a transfer mistake) esp when phil hits his bass
this is purely a document, just like reading an newspaper article on the show,
but if you need more flesh to the bone > go for it and don't complain
this copy is 5th gen ..played dolby b on nak cr-7e"

This is a speed corrected and restored version of the complete 4-disc set that is
circulating. It replaces that set and an older 3-disc version that cut off during
"Comes A Time".
The 4-disc source was missing the beginning of "Dark Star" and "He's Gone".
Those parts were restored using clips from the 3-disc set. Also restored was
a short blurb from Weir at the end of "Morning Dew". "Ramble On Rose" has been
moved to the beginning of disc 3 where it belongs. Detailed notes on the
restoration are below.
Thanks to terrapinstation for providing the newer 4-disc set that this was based on.

This show has often been listed as a SBD>MR>C>D>CD. Eaton's list indicates a cassette master, and states a lineage of MSC>D. It seems possible that this recording is from the Eaton DAT and has no cassette generation, though the amount of hiss makes an analog generation seem likely.

AUDMC > Reel > Reel > CD > DAT > WAV > SHN
Recorded by Donn Amick, FOB, Sony EMC mics spread out across the
row > TC-126 master cassette > Amick's Reel recorded at 7-1/2ips >
Matt Williams' Reel at 3-3/4ips w/ Dolby(Teac AN-60)
A > D by Matt Williams and Noah Weiner, January - April, 2003
Reel playback on Teac X-1000R(no Dolby) > untracked CDs on Teac
RW-CD22 > CDs playback on Toshiba SD-5700 > Teac AN-180 Dolby
decoder > Fostex D5 DAT (A>D only) > Turtle Beach Montego II
Digital I/O > Sound Forge (wav edits and track IDs) > SHNTOOL
(SBE fix) > MKW (shn)
Amick put fade out/ins between most every song on his reel,
leaving small dead air spaces between songs. These spaces were
edited out in Sound Forge to provide a more smooth transition
from track to track. Also worth mentioning is that Amick "dropped
out" many years ago, to Hawaii apparently, and his masters and
reels have vanished with him for the time being. |

('fixed', which in this case is a bit elaborate of a
description for what I did, 10/2003 by matt@xsite.net.
The copy I got had zero-padding on both ends of nearly
all the tracks (bad DAE at some point?), so I clipped
all the leading/trailing zeroes and stitched each
disc back together using Cool Edit Pro, then re-cut
the tracks using CDWav. This source, thus, isn't
any different than the one I got; it's just a little
easier to listen to because the transitions actually
transit. |

Master Soundboard Reel > DAT supplies Playin' in the Band>Wharf Rat>Playin' in the Band, as well as Eyes of the World
The audience source (a big thanks to Skankweed, btw) was also used for Weir's "countdown" into Playin' in the Band, then the Soundboard kicks in at the 1st note of Playin'. The reel to reel being turned off and back on in between songs has been edited out for your listening pleasure. The beginning of Ship of Fools is cut on the master.

S:MR>1 cass>DAT>ZA2>SHN [revised from original info file]
This version sounds nothing like the previously-circulating "sbd>reel>reel>dat" version and represents a MAJOR upgrade.
The music actually comes to us from two different tapes with very similar qualities. However, one tape had about the first 1 minute and 40 seconds missing on Promised Land, so I spliced it in from the other tape. The other tape had some other problems, not to mention a good portion of the between song banter cut out, so needless to say, we used the good tape for that.

As of Sept 00, this copy is just entering circulation. For more info on the source of this copy, read Jim Powell's comments below.
.shn and .md5 created by Mike Hall (myko@well.com)
>From Jim Powell:
"OK, I just got the master of the DeadLists Edition of Roosevelt
Stadium, Jersey City 8/6/74: a digital copy of the master SBD reels
with the 20 second flip cut in Scarlet Begonias patched with an
excellent AUD master. This is the entire show including Seastones, in
perfect condition, on 4 CDs.
...
We owe thanks especially to Hugh Barroll, who passed along CDs of a
digital copy of the master SBD; to Ihor Slabicky, who supplied a copy of
his AUD master of the show; and to Dave Greenberg, who used Soundforge
to patch the tape flip in Scarlet Begonias on the SBD and produce our
masters. Noah Weiner also helped with the project, forwarding a copy of
Barry Glassberg's AUD master."
and later Jim reiterated:
"The lineage of this copy of 8/6/74 is MR > DAT > CDs. It is the
entire show, uncut, including Seastones (and the encore). The flip chop
in Scarlet is expertly patched with excellent AUD. It very markedly
upgrades the copy that came around a year or so ago, as well as all
other circulating copies. Until and unless they release this as a Dick's
Picks, and do as good or better a job than we have with the patch, this
is the ultimate copy of this alltime great show, hands down, no shit."
**********
FURTHUR: More work was done on this by David Gans using Sonic Solutions. A digital copy of Ihor Slabicky's tape and the cd's from Dave Greenberg were used to further patch the reel flips in Eyes of the World and Truckin'. David also edited the reel starts and stops between songs. Nothing that was said was removed. What we have here is the *FINAL* copy of this, my first show, to be circulated!
These .shn's have been generated from the discs David Gans made. MD5's have been generated for both the .wav and .shn files. I, before sending Greenbergs disks to Gans, retracked the original Disk 2 as there were 2 leadin tracks that were orphaned from the main song track.
Jim said it first, " .. this is the ultimate copy of this alltime great show, hands down, no shit."

Notes: Casey Jones has brief low-level crackle possibly due to a bad
microphone; Wharf Rat has a thirty-second section of analog tape damage
leading to a cut during the song. There is an illegal bootleg available of
this date that apparently has no cut in Wharf Rat, but the cut has been
edited out and the song is about 30 seconds shorter than on the Betty reel.
No EQ has been performed. You hear what is on the Betty reels, as best as
we can get it to you.

Master Soundboard Cassette > 1 Reel to Reel gen > DAT
Master Audience Cassette> unknown mics/deck > possible analog gen> DAT source supplies from 0:00 thru 2:35 of "Take A Step Back" (d1t01), as well as patches in "Big River" (d1t08) from 5:49 thru 6:10, "Samson & Delilah" (d2t04) from 0:39 thru 1:07 and in the "Billy, Mickey & Phil jam" (d3t03) from 1:54 thru 2:14.
there is some minor "crackling" present, most noticeable during the 1st set. This "crackle" is present on both copies I've heard of this show.

Audience recording by Jim Wise (Sennhaiser 421>D5) set up loge center
Master Cassette (playback on Nakamichi Dragon) > A/D Conversion via Sony R700 (no DAT gen) > COAX to ZA2 > Soundforge > Master CDR > CDR(1) Via Tascam cd-d4000mkII > EAC in secure mode(see below) > Soundforge > CD WAV > SHNv3 w/seek tables appended
A>D>CD Conversion by Jim Wise, 3/2001
CD>SHN by Jamie Lutch, 4/2001
Known Flaws:
Cassette flip in Drums - crossfaded
Cassette flip between Wharf Rat and Around - left untouched
The only other editing done was crossfading of cassette flips between songs in which case no music was disturbed.

Jim Wise's Master Audience Cassette; Nakamichi CM700 mics >Sony TC-D5
supplies the tuning and first few notes of "Deep Elem Blues" (d1t06), approximately 0:38.
Both the Sbd and the Aud are missing the beginning of "US Blues" (d3t08).

Karamazov Brothers join during Drums
Pete Townshend sitting in from Not Fade Away through Around & Around.
Drums on disc 2 is only the beginning; it is complete on disc 3.
appending d3t01 after d2t09 will give you a seamless transition
(if someone wants to transfer the WAV files back to DAT), but
you'll have to change CDs regardless of how you track it.
Lineage: stereo FM -> reel master -> DAT -> CDWAV -> SoundForge -> CDR
patch in d2t09: stereo FM -> cassette master -> SoundForge -> CDR
d3t07: stereo FM -> cassette master -> cassette -> CDR
source assembling, DAT->CD transfer, tracking & patching by Hanno Bunjes (hanno.bunjes@gmx.de). All comments welcome!

Patch provides Tenn Jed > Minglewood, China > Rider, Sugar Mags, Saturday Night
Notes:
-- I'm pretty sure that the SBD portion of the show is Cass Master -> Cass.
-- The AUD patch is an upgrade to the aud that currently circulates.
-- The Disc 2 -> Disc 3 transition is seemless.

recording notes:
a "tick" was removed at approximately the 3:09 mark of "Sugaree" (d1t01),
additionally, during "Let It Grow" (d1t06) there was no left channel
from 6:17 thru 6:45, no right channel from 6:45 thru 6:49,
no left channel from 6:49 thru 7:27, no right channel from 7:27 thru 7:57
and no left channel from 8:27 thru 8:35. Subsequently, the existing channel
was cut/pasted to the missing channel, essentially creating a mono mix
during the aforementioned timings. |

not well circulated this is why I converted it. The SBD copies I have
seen are missing China Cat and Knockin'. D1t06 (Queen Jane
Approximately) after the end of the song during the track there is a
buzzing noise @ 6:09-6:36 removed. D1t09 (Tennessee Jed) not during the
song but at the end of the track digital pop @ 8:21 removed. D2t08
(Drums) Cass. flip @ :45. D3t01 (Space) Digital pop @ :04 removed.
D3t03 (I Need A Miracle) Digital pop @ :01 removed.
Conversion/Edit/Seeded to Etree by T. Wiley 8/26/2002.
EAC: Secure to extract disks 1 and 2 @ 100% and disk 3 @ 99.9% quality
no reported errors.

Same FOB source was used to patch in the first note or so of China Cat which was missing from the SBD DAT copy.

** Even though the lineage is kind of vague-this is one fantastic sounding DAUD**
The show itself isn't that well played(Jerry trying to remember how wharf rat starts is very sad to hear) However, for some reason this is one of the most requested shows off my list, I think it was a lot of peoples final show and want to have it for nostalgia's sake:-) I figured instead of having to do 10 b+ps a month for it, I would just upload it to etree and let it grow that way:-) Enjoy---Jeff M.
