02/18/69 Columbia Records Studio CDR 2 Bob Dylan Dimestore Medicine Wild Card 65 Silver CDs > EAC > WAV > mkwACT > SHN Posted to alt.binaries.music.shn. cross-posted to alt.binaries.music.shn.dylan 12/02 by MC66 Moe's review from Deep Beneath The Waves: http://www.expectingrain.com/dok/rmd/xyx/80/beneath87.html "Attempt to bring together the extant versions of sessions noted above would have been wildly successful had the glorious piano-version "She's Your Lover Now" been included.... a shame that inexplicable omission was made, as the set is superb in its execution of what was included. Best quality versions throughout (see tracklist below), including versions that appear on BIOG and BS1-3 (5 tracks, I believe), give this an air of a "Blood on the Tapes"-type set from 1965.... and with all the "important" alternates/ outtakes and such (save the glaring omission already noted), this one is a keeper. While disk 1 provides a hell of a listen, disk two from the "Bringin' It" outtakes through the '65 live (perfect sound from audio-only "DLB" DVD) and the complete Les Crane performances/interview is perhaps the most engaging 60+ minutes I've heard in some time (the quality on the Les Crane show is stunning). The setlist speaks for itself.... with a little tweaking here and there, i.e. including piano "SYLN", a diff "LARS" rehearsal session... this would have been a bullseye. As it is, it's in the circle but short of scoring a 100. Much welcome piece as much of this has been unavailable on disk for some time ("Thin Wild Mercury Music" from "long ago" comes to mind). Oh, an outrageous color cover shot of Bob out in "the shed" with Sara in the foreground and a back cover color shot of BD in a wild canary yellow shirt circa 1966." 08/28/68 Avalon Ballroom CDR 1 Filler - 12-23-1970 1. Hard to Handle 2. Candyman 3. Me & My Uncle 4. Cold Rain & Snow NOTES: 1. Mastered to CDR by Steve Martin: "I transfered Dicks reel on a revox A77 onto a Sony F2 PCM unit. My Beta Pcm I transfered to CD-R directly Using Cardas cables." Hiss predominant through first 28 seconds of d1t1 then improves considerably. 2. flaws noted by mvernon d1t2 - drop out ~2:44 - 2:47 d1t3 ~ initial vocals extremely weak, barely audible spectral analysis shows almost no frequencies higher than ~5khz, imparting a distant, slightly "tunnel" sound. Nevertheless, it is quite listenable. 3. Vol. 1 of the Taper's Compendium lists a "Schoolgirl" as the first number along with a Bill Graham introduction. At this time these are no longer associated with this date. 4. Deadlists has the following comments: The first two bars of Dark Star are clipped. In the first verse, Jerry sings: "Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes. Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis." And then, instead of "Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion" he sings: "Glass hand dissolving... recedes in the nights of goodbye". He realizes he's out in no man's land as he sort of trails off a bit while singing "goodbye". The next verse is: "Shall we go, you and I while we can, Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?" He sings "transitive NIGHT fall of diamonds" as if expecting Phil to hit the high harmonies, but realizing as soon as he sings "night" that no one's coming to the rescue.

09/11/74 Alexandra Palace CDR 4 Candelario Matrix MSR D CD except first 15:22 of Seastones (on Disc #2): AUD end of Sunshine Daydream and encore: AUD This is the Candelario matrix SBD reel recording. From 2:10 to 3:00 of Scarlet Begonias the mix gets strange while Kid adjusts his levels. We have left this passage intact (there is another version in circulation where it is patched with AUD). We have patched in from an AUD master the first 15:22 of Seastones, the tail end of Sunshine Daydream, and US Blues, all missing on the circulating MSR D. Naturally this set supplements and does not supplant the portions of this show released as parts of Dick's Picks #7, but until GDM releases the show complete, this will do the trick nicely. Dave Greenberg did the final mastering of these discs. We don't know who mastered the patch of SSDD and US Blues; we extracted this portion from a CD of the MSR D containing Eyes through the end of the show, with this patch already in place, and nicely done -- our compliments to whoever mastered it. HB also provided important assistance. This project was instigated and these notes written by Jim Powell. SHN conversion by Jay Gerland (jay@theblackdog.org) with seed provided by Jed Distler (jdistler@composerscollab.org). Minor Edits: All edits done in SF 5.0 after resampling to 44.1kHz, prior to tracking. Fades in/out beg/end of sets--5 sec for sets I and III, 3 sec for set II Nasty digital sounding noise on master inbetween Peaches and Divided removed/patched with the patch source (see above for source/conversion info). This was done by overlapping the sources pre/post glitch and crossfading to make the patch seamless: 8.080 sec duration in on both sides of the patch, with the source going from -infdb to 0db and the destination going from 0db to -infdb and vice versa on the other end of the patch (i.e. SF defaults). The patch was also normalized to -8.0db. (-39.81%) to ensure dynamic continuity. Beginning of set III levels were not close to even (first 2min), hence the following fix was applied: Normalized LC to -8.0db (39.81%) from 0 -> 00:02:02.136, paste in first 1:48.576 of it, channel swap crossfade on 1:48.576 -> 1:58.607(midpt) -> 2:08.638 (at 50%, 10.31s on ea side, 0.0db) to make the transition fairly seamless. At approximately 11:50pm Father Time collapsed from exhaustion and the clock stops. At this time a fan boat was heard from a set of speakers in the back corner of the concert field and a large fan boat entered the field from halfway back, stage right. After crossing 1/4th of the field the sides and top of the fan boat were blown off to reveal the band riding in the hot dog from the 1994 NYE show. The hotdog crossed the concert field and the approached the stage as the band threw lei's and other goodies into the crowd. As the hot dog neared the stage, an instrumental version of "Meatstick" came over the PA. Once the hotdog reached the stage, the band disembarked carrying several meatsticks which were fed to Father Time, reviving him so that the clock could continue moving towards midnight. ^ - instrumental version with the band picking up the song from a pre-recorded version played over the PA for the last 45 seconds of the year ^^ - with vocal/instrumental jam as Trey, Mike and Page sang the notes as they played them ^^^ - recorded live for ABC TV's Millennium coverage (aired between 3:15 and 3:30am EST); Trey instructed the crowd to chant the word "Cheesecake" rather than clap and cheer at the close of the song in an attempt to confuse the TV viewers (similar to the "secret language" additions for the 1992 NYE show); Trey introduced the band for the recorded footage and offered a message of peace and love for the world about the importance of the left lane of the highway being the passing lane % - with "Cheesecake" vocal jam %% - Trey solo acoustic %%% - from "The Siket Disc" with Mike holding up a voice box repeating the phrase "Quadrophonic Toppling" %%%% - with Jon on vacuum; Jon introduced Page before the song and Mike and Trey afterwards, and the band as being Phish 2000 $ - no encore; post-show music over the PA was the Beatles "Here Comes the Sun"

But, if you were running a 13-year old DAT, FOB, in a sand-floored cattle auction barn, under the influence of several powerful substances, in the dark, crammed into the front row of 800 dancing FLOK, you'd have level issues, too! :^) What a great little festival this is. You should go next year! This recording was made with the D3, external battery pack, and battery box balanced on a 1" wide aluminum rail that capped the barrier between crowd and stage. I am still amazed that the gear remained there, completely unmolested, for the whole set, although a flying beach ball knocked the whole rig onto the sandy plywood front-of-house floor about three minutes before the band took the stage. Sigh. SKB was rushed offstage after a shorter-than-planned set in order to get the schedule back on track for that stage. This is the fan's loss, as SKB was certainly *on* this time.
