comments: is there a better way to start the new year than offering you an upgrade of a just nice recording? I guess not.
My friends, here is what seems to be a DAT transfer of the master cassette of this great show in its fully natural and absolutely raw glory!

This is a DAT tape myself and Neonknight got together and which he "juice-extracted" with the precious help of Beechwood's Sony SDT-9000 setup.
The only drawbacks of this transfer, which is a DAT(3), were a few issues introduced in any of these 3 DAT generations, like a few clicks of digital origins here and there (mostly present in the first set) and a 2 seconds silent gap, with loss of material, around the end of the guitar solo into Money, which I patched from the circulating raw version of the 1st gen Reel, but if you replace the track 10 with the extra one I've included in the "no patch" folder, you will restore it to the original unedited version... 2 choices is better than one.
The speed was just OK on the whole thing, save for Echoes which ran about 2.5% fast, then the speed correction was applied only to Echoes while the rest is as raw as on the DAT tape.

But, let's give a quick insight about the differences between this version and the raw 1st gen Reel, which is (or was?) the current best circulating version...

- there is a cut at the start of YGBC which was "joined" on the 1st gen Reel;

- the cut at the end of SOYCD is the same on both sources;

- the 2 seconds silent gap on Money in this master is of digital origin and it matches the lenght of the missing audio, then the missing bit is surely present in the analog tape and maybe also in some of the previous DAT generation(s);

- there is some more audience at the end of DSOTM compared to the 1st gen Reel;

- the fade out and cut at the end of TGGITS and the very short silent gap about 1 minute and half into ACYL on the 1st gen Reel aren't present here;

- the 1st gen Reel has a tracking signal around 15650~15700Hz, which might have been introduced from some TV/Video equipment while recording the tape, this version here doesn't show any tracking signals;

- both versions show a few short drop outs on one or the other channel during Echoes which are, evidently, native to the recording;

- this version runs at correct speed with Echoes slightly faster and at slighly lower volume, and also the raw 1st gen Reel has Echoes slightly faster than the rest but, also, the whole thing is slightly faster than this version;

- the lenght of the various pieces does suggest that, at least for the first and second set here, it was used a 120 minutes cassette;

Now, lets give a look at the sound differences...

The 1st gen Reel seems to have been subjected to some change in EQ, like either a dolby encoding (but few R2R decks had inbuilt dolby, but an external dolby processor, even if they weren't maybe that common, might be an option) or some EQ change/mismatch while recording the 1st gen Reel and then playing/transferring it.

Matter of fact, while patching the 2 sec silent gap into Money, equalizing the short patch segment to match the sound of this master by reducing a few decibels with a shelving-alike filter from the mids and on (and matching the level, of course) did the trick nicely, and such kind of filtering, in the opposite way, is quite compatible with any of the aforementioned possible reasons.

At the other side, this version is louder, fuller, warmer and with less hiss than the 1st gen Reel, which always sounded to me very nice but a tad bit thin and metallic, without the needed power in the bass.
Finally, here, the bass is there and with good punch and dynamics, and the treble are all there but their level is more "natural" and the ambience or, better, the depth of the ambience is really fine now and playing it loud in your speakers will give you the impression of being there with that nice stereo soundstage and a nice 3D touch.
So, if the circulating 1st gen Reel is really a 1st gen, this one is at least one generation down and then it can only be the master, as this DAT clone was actually labelled.

Enjoy,

Vince.
