Ok, here it is. I have been working on this thing off and on since 1999. It has grown and evolved from one disc at first, then to two discs, and now its current incarnation.
The idea was to collect all the rare and unreleased songs that were played live but never appeared on a Why Store record. This includes original tunes (some of which did eventually see the light of day on Shaffer's post-Why Store albums), classic cover songs and one-off live improvisations.
For each track, I have dug through literally hundreds of hours of material (about 120 shows in all) to seek out the best version. With some exceptions, almost every single song is from a different show. "Best version" is very subjective, but follows three main criteria: mix, recording and performance. Whenever possible, digital sources were used, and a lot of these were pulled from sound man Steve Spergl's original DAT tapes (just like Live At Midnight was). However, some of the stuff is so old it predates DAT, so most of the songs before the end of 1993 come from analog cassette tapes (contributed by Mo). Joe Kramer also deserves a lot of credit for getting Mo's tapes onto compact disc.
After I picked the songs and assembled them in chronological order, MDS mastered the audio and edited the tracks together to sound like one long show. The result is the ultimate WHY STORE bootleg!
