Medeski Martin and Wood is a three piece "jazz" trio. I put jazz in quotes because while the band has its roots in jazz, namely piano jazz, the band is actually a fusion of piano jazz/acid jazz/avantgarde/funk and just about everything else. From Hendrix, to Coltrane, to PJ Harvey, these guys arent afraid to experiment and try new things. This show, IMO, epitomizes everything that makes live music so special, and makes addicts like us always keep searching for that "it" show. Well focus, this is the "it" show.

This show took place in Fall 2001, an exciting time for MMW. Before I get to the actual show, let me just say that this is the best audience recording Ive ever heard, any band. The mics were clamped to the stage lip, and it sounds warmer than any soundboard you've ever heard. I highly recommend listening to the show with headphones, as it will give you even more of an appreciation of the sonic goodness this show delivers. That said, let me get to the show. The first 30 minutes are some of the most spell binding, mindnumbing improvisation I have ever heard. The first 3 minutes are a quiet, ambient-esque progression, with swirling keyboard effects, and Billy (drums) banging on some pieces of metal. The band works their way into a very very early version of the song Smoke, then weaves in and out of a few very distinct grooves, though all of it is improvisational jamming. The rest of the show is absolutely stellar, including solid jams in just about every song, with a stellar version of Seven Deadlies seguing into Africa by John Coltrane. For the MMW virgins, the Crosstown Traffic will probably blow you away. The show ends with Billy Martin walking to the stagelip and playing into the mics set up.

I really don't know what else to say. If you've wanted to get into these guys but didnt know where to start, this is your show. If you are looking for something completely different, this show is the place to start. If you have heard lots of MMW and dont have this show, you absolutely need it. I hope everyone enjoys, please leave your window open to give others a shot, and please comment and let me know what you think. Thanks.
