Finally! Fer the first time liberated! The Butthole Surfers live at Variety Arts Center from 11/7/87!!

This is the first in a series of Butthole Surfers videos that will add and upgrade to the series posted by Hoth. Matt, Creach, and my other fellow infidels...

The audio recording of this show has FEREVER been a classic in and of itself. Now that the COMPLETE video has finally surfaced, it is surely an historic event! Formerly, only two songs (“Gary Floyd” and “Psychedelic Jam”) had seen the light of day, and even the video of these songs was spliced with ridiculous horror movie footage. This means of the 10mins of video that had been circulating, only about 5 minutes was actual footage from the concert. Now, here is the complete performance!

There are soo many wonderful things about his show, it’s hard to know where to start. For one thing, at 110 minutes, it’s a true marathon set, one of the longest of the band’s career. Another is that after nearly a year, “Something” finds its way back into the set fer a one off performance. It wouldn’t be pulled out again until the 12/31/88 Warner Theatre show with the CRAMPS. A flaming guitar smash at the end sets the stage fer what is to come. Full on psychedelic insanity.

Also, during this time, the band would feature what I have come to call the “Scream Sequence”; a full screaming breakdown into a noise jam that could peel paint off the walls. Certain sets would breakdown mid-song, only to have a reprise back into the song after utter chaos. Such is not the case here, but it is one of the longer sequences, with Gibby reciting the words to the Mel Tillis classic “Ruby (Don’t Take Your Love to Town)”.

The one thing that is somewhat regrettable is that Kathleen Lynch is not the dancer here. It is one of the few shows during her tenure with the band that does not feature the lovely and talented Ms. Lynch. Kathleen is a true artist. Her dancing was at once erotic and grotesque. She personified the music and embodied the band’s aesthetic. Her replacement here is certainly no match. I have been told Gibby put a nix to having anybody other than Kathleen dance. It was a smart move. Thankfully, we do have the 4/3/87 VAC video to witness her true brilliance. This is surely a minor quibble with this behemoth, and yer no fool…yer ratio is rapidly heading south as you read this!...;-)

Some history:
Although ‘Hairway to Steven’ wouldn’t be released fer months, the fall 1987 shows could almost be considered the ‘Hairway’ tour. They had been playing most of the songs from the album fer over a year, and had honed them over the course of the seemingly endless 1987 tour. “Johnny Smoke” had become a staple of their sets as early as January of 1986 and now, with the most recent additions of “Backass” and “Fast” (not played here) to the set, they had been playing nearly the whole album.

The only song that hadn’t been performed as of yet was “X-Ray”. Here would be its debut performance. It was not to be, however. Someone throws an object at Gibby, and he decides to bail on it just a few strains in. It’s an odd ending to the show, considering they had already been playing fer nearly 2 hours. Who knows how much longer the show might have gone on if they hadn’t decided to give the big ‘fuck you’ and walk off stage…As it stands, ”X-Ray” doesn’t show up on any recordings fer another 3 months, at the February 12, 1988 London, Mean Fiddler show.

The recording:
The gentleman I received this from told me the taper was Reagan Boon, D. Boone’s brother. I haven’t been able to confirm this, or even that D. Boon had a brother, Reagan. I can only give kudos to the man who lugged his camera on his shoulder fer nearly 2 hours to capture this. The shot is great, the sound is sweet, the battery somehow lasts, and everything about this recording is as good as you could ever hope fer. Much respect to him!

I made sure to record this video in HQ mode when transferring it to DVD. A document this important should be preserved properly, so it was. I think the time it will take to grab this (all ~8GBs!) will be worth it to you once you see it.

Source 2?:
There are accounts of a Dave Markey video recording of this show. Mr Markey did record the 4/3/87 VAC video as well as the 10/21/88 VAC Riot footage, so it’s very possible it exists. I was told however, Mr Boone, not Mr. Markey, is the source of this particular source. If another source is out there, it has never seen the light of day, and from what I hear, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting fer it to turn up. Of course, if Dave Markey is here, and wants to post it, I’d make quite a composite ;))…

There are chapters every 5mins (my new standalone doesn’t allow ya to put in manual chapters, which blows). There’s no cool menu either. If you wanted to make a definitive version, ya could do that fer yerself. What is here, however, is the complete video fer one of the all-time classic Butthole Surfers shows ever.
