Memories
I was going to school but Joe was playing on a weeknight with Terry Allen and I just had to go.
My friend John Musgrave loaned me his recording equipment and I was set.
Barbette (my brave girlfriend) volunteered to go with me to this club in a spooky part of downtown Los Angeles (think cardboard mobile homes).
Turned out to be a birthday party for Terry Allen.
Terry was playing the house piano, which became a source of some humor.
More than once a couple keys came loose and one of the foot pedals broke.
The seating was right up to the “stage” and we were 1 table back (6-8 feet).
Al’s bar was definitively a drinking establishment and many of the patrons became quite loud.
There is even some uninhibited woman in the audience (Carol) singing along with Terry and later on during Joes set also.
A local bar patron (Scott Brud Ryan) brought his trombone and he joined in towards the end of Joe’s first show.
Later on he re-appeared to jam with Terry and Joe during the late show.
He was no Tommy Dorsey (to quote someone in the crowd) but it may be the only recording of Joe Ely with a trombone accompaniment.
We stayed for the second show and it was even wilder than the first.
The finale was Terry pushing this upright piano over on it’s back which resulted in even more keys flying across the stage.
Joe Ely went way past closing time so the bar locked the doors at 2 AM and declared this a private party.
The musicians then returned for an extended encore.
Finally at some time near 3 AM the show wound down and after decompressing a bit we left for home just in time for me to leave for school.
Decided to leave a short section at the end with post concert comments from the recorders.
An exce;llent quality audience recording.
