Dead Can Dance make their triumphant return after a 7 year hiatus in support of their new release, "Anastasis". The album marks their first studio effort since 1996's "Spritchaser". I'm not one to usually succumb to cliches such as
triumphant return". However, in this case it's completely appropriate. Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerard have crafted a work of utter beauty (sorry, that's another one) that effortlessly traverses traditional Arabic, Celtic, Greek and Turkish influences within a more contemporary structure. It's unmistakenly Dead Can Dance and the breadth of the performance here illustrates a reverence for all forms of music (except for Lynyrd Skynyrd perhaps). Something this audience was
sorely lacking. Both Perry and Gerard's voices consume the entire venue. The band was completely stellar and provided the perfect vessel for their voices. Perry continuously admonishes the drunken d-bags in the audience that appropriately and incessantly shout out song titles and whistle loudly between numbers. He recounts a time 15 years prior when he walked off the same stage ending the show early. He even tell them to "Stop Clapping!" at one point. This also plagued his solo performance that I attended 14 months prior at The El Rey. The stage set was one of simple elegance and was slightly reminescent of David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto's setups. Their was a net adorned with LED's that would be raised and lowered at certain intervals to great effect.

The recording...
I had purchased tickets the day they went on sale. I opted to take advantage of Live Nation's "3-Day Return Guarantee" and exchange my tickets for front row balcony tickets. I chose the center of my section to avoid as many "pass-throughs" as possible. I was in direct line with the right ceiling stack. My head was positioned on the rail as much as possible with the majority of the audience 40' below. Their are a few minor occurences of phasing. The most notable during the opener "Children Of The Sun" when those seated to my right took their seats late. There's a minor level spike that I edited as best as possible. The girl to my right did some clapping between and during the first few notes of some songs. Fortunately she was respectful and not imposing like several others in the audience. Fortunately, there were no loud chatters, screamers or whistlers in my immediate vicinity except for the encore breaks. I'm going out on a limb and giving this an "Excellent" in spite of the imperfections because the performance is sublime and little gets in the way of the songs themselves. I made a last minute menu change on the recorder to 48/24 before the show began. I'm glad I did because I had to boost the levels pretty significantly in post.


Of note...

The brilliant new "Anastasis" is performed in its entirety (01,02,06,07,04,10,20,14). As such, many fan favourite's, most notably "Sprit", "The Carnival
Is Over" and the much shouted "Severence" are conspicuously absent from the set. Still, I wouldn't have changed anything from the performance. Lisa
humbly proclaims "You are absolutely fabulous!" at the end of the night's performance to a rapturous audience.
