J-Card Comment:

The last time we saw DCD was in Seattle in 2005 in the beautiful Paramount Theater and this time we got a completely different experience. Not really a "hits" tour like that one was, this featured most of the new record and I was excited to see them in such a different setting. After driving all day to get there (I live 400 miles away), we arrived at the picturesque outdoor venue late in the afternoon This show started quite early (7:30PM) and most of it was played in full light/dusk. The venue was a botanical garden on a university campus surrounded by flowers and lush foliage in the foothills above Salt Lake. The audience was spread out seated on blankets in the grass amphitheater...a real wine and cheese type of place. There was a large blocked area of low chairs for season ticket holders....overall a fantastic location for a concert.

When we got there, almost all the great recording locations had been taken....absolutely nothing FOB but we found a perfect spot directly in front on the far right side directly facing a large stack of PA components which appeared to be a configuration of 3 types of speakers including all the high's and low's. I heard several locals commenting that this was the first show they had seen there where extra PA stacks had been placed on the sides of the stage to augment the sound of the hanging stacks so it became my plan to just make a direct stack recording with very little crowd noise. At the '05 Seattle shows you could have heard a pin drop but this time the SLC crowd was a little more rowdy with various call-outs to the band and quite a bit of cheering but most of this is peripheral to the recording since I was right in the PA.

When DCD came on we were directly in line with the band (directly to their left) so the view was not perfect but the sound was excellent. This recording was done almost right in the PA stack....probably about 17 feet or so away. About halfway through the show the side to my right filled in with folks who wanted to dance as the rest of the crowd was seated to enjoy the show. There is a bit of crowd chatter (sounds somewhat distant to the right through the mics) as the crowd there grew a little. The downside to this recording is that I forgot my windscreens and what was a perfectly still evening built into a light breeze. The very last song is a quiet song by Lisa (who looked like a Greek goddess the entire night) and is marred by some of the wind noise on the mics.
