Taper Notes:
Barely started the recorder before Joe started singing.
A new deck for me and I turned the volume knob the wrong way (down instead of up).
Post production adjustments increased the noise floor for those first 8 seconds

fuzzy memories
Standing in line at the Palace and up walks my old taping partner John.
It had been quite a while since we had recorded together.
Had actually been a few years since we had seen each other.
The plan was to record with another friend (Mario) but he backed out so John could help out instead.

As the tape runs out John calls out, "this is an LAX reunion".
We called our little taping group the L.A. Tape Exchange (LAX), which included John, Mark (the B Man) and Mike.
Life was pulling all of us in different directions and it turns out this was the last time John and I recorded a concert together.
Well there's still time left and you never know.

The microphones were borrowed and the notes do not include a model number.
Sennheiser Omni directional dynamic (x 2) is what is written on the tape box.

After "Dallas" Joe mentions "playing for a fire drill" commenting on his aborted show at the Palomino.
The last time Joe was in town he played at the Palomino and it was sold out way over capacity.
Joe finally comes on and plays with incredible energy for twenty minutes and poof... the fire marshal ends the show.
By the way, Joe knew how to handle these situations and he grabbed his acoustic and went outside and kept playing to the crowd forming on the sidewalk.
But this memory is for another tape at another time.

After this Palace show John took off but Mario, Sue and I went out to the parking lot and were drinking a couple beers next to my car while listening to this tape.
We were out there for so long there were only 2 cars remaining in the parking lot.
Wanted to light one up myself (not a drinker) but of course the other car was parked right next to me.
Well here finally comes the driver of that car......and it was Joe!
Sue got so excited she dropped her beer bottle which broke and shot beer in all directions, no shit!
Cracked Joe up and he hung out with us for a little while.
We all had a beer together while listening to a bit of this recording on my car stereo.
Then Joe took off for Pinks (a local hot dog stand) and we followed.
He was with friends there, so doing the polite thing we left them alone.
That was our short encounter with Joe Ely!
What a cool guy.
