U2 returns to Paris to make up two shows that were postponed less than a month ago by the November 13 terrorist attacks across the city. Before tonight's show, there's an announcement over the PA system that the concert includes the sounds of loud explosions -- a reference to the audio/video that serves as an introduction to "Raised By Wolves."
The show itself is emotional, with the audience singing loudly and Bono making several references to the attacks. After "I Will Follow," he tells the crowd that "our prayer tonight is to be useful to you" and says it's "an honor and privilege to serve you this evening." He changes the lyrics during "Pride" to say "early evening November 13th, shots rung out in the Paris sky." And during "City Of Blinding Lights," the arena is bathed in the colors of the French flag while the names of the terrorist attack victims scroll slowly on the video screen.
Patti Smith joins the band on stage as "Bad" ends and sings a bit of her version of "Gloria" with Bono. She stays on stage and the show closes with a potent version of "People Have The Power." [2 hrs, 31 mins] |
