LDB Special Series #84

Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the
musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my
cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed!
I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my
reward for all the work involved in this project.

DO NOT share this music on mp3, just convert it for your own use. Sharing mp3's is the right way to make me stop sharing
music at DIME.

Italy was really the first country to give Genesis a chance, we all know that. We also know that between 1972 and 1974 the
band regularly toured the peninsula, in 1972 they even did two tours: april and august. In 1973 they played as part of the
Charisma festival and again the following year for the Selling England tour. Meanwhile, things were rapidly changing in
the country: from the early 70's politics and ideology took the place of music, possibly mixing with them. At one point it
was normal behaviour for the audience to enter the shows without paying tickets as much as it was normal to use concerts to
showcase political differents and fight during gigs. Italy was not a secure place to play anymore. Nearly all international
acts just stopped touring Italy after a few unfortunate circumstances: Led Zeppelin had to stop their show in Milano after
three songs only; VDGG had their instruments stolen during an italian tour; a bomb was thrown onstage in 1977 during a
Santana show; a Kiss show had to be stopped because of riots in 1980 and in the same year PFM almost had to finish
their show after 45 minutes because the audience was throwing objects onstage.

Genesis played one last show in 1975 in Torino (and even then there were incidents and riots outside the venue before
the show), then never again. Italians who wanted to see the band live were forced to travel to Switzerland or France, if not
to Germany. It wasn't untill 1982 that the band came back to our country. Maybe it was a present from the band because we
had just become football world champions in Spain!

This collection presents the three shows played after a 7 and half years absence from the country that first discovered
them. Since 1982, the band played no more that 3 shows with the line-up featuring Collins: once in Milano (1987) and twice
in Rome (1987 and 2007). They did not play on the We Can't Dance tour because the date in Torino was cancelled to fit the
Munich one which had been cancelled because of a truck european strike.

I acquired these tapes back in the mid 80's. From two of them I am certain about the generation, the second Rome date has
unknown generation. But all three are extremely nice and feature probably the best setlist of the whole 80's and 90's. All
three are interesting: in Tirrenia (near Pisa) it was a kind of try-out for Collins' funny presentations in italian, in Roma
1st night a strange guy (I know his name but I would not reveal it here!) was shouting during all show against the new
material. It was possibly the best of the three dates musicwise while the 2nd night in Roma is probably the best one
qualitywise. In Tirrenia the last encore (I Know What I Like) was not played.

Overall, I nice piece of italian history from a band that is no more like it used to be...
