Capture (Source 2) :
Sony ECM-909 stereo condenser mic in hat > Sony WM D6C Professional Recording Walkman (Dolby off) > Maxell XL-II S 90 master cassettes

Transfer playback :
Maxell XL-II S 90 master cassettes (felt pads spring extra flexed) > Tascam 202mkII playback deck (Dolby off, normal bias PB, azimuth adjusted for each tape side) > Radio Shack gold end 3.5mm to stereo rca cord > Shack 6 foot gold end 3.5mm stereo extension cord > Soundblaster Audigy @ 24 bit 96 khz > Wavelab 5.01b (recording, tracking, and mastering)

Mastering plug-ins :
ToolOne used to re-process the Mid-Side mic pattern in the microphone that didn't seem to get processed correctly by the onboard electronics in the mic > Waves S1 Shuffler used to widen the stereo spread > Waves Q10 Paragraphic EQ used to smooth out some mid sharpness, enhance the low end, and find the highs that are buried on the master tapes > Open Ambience Project SHEPPi Spatial Enhancer used sparingly to enhance the immersive effect of sound that surrounds the listener > BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer to strengthen the impact of the sound > Peak Master used for hard limiting any stray peaks

Downsample and Dither:
24/96 wav > Foobar2000 (SoX resampler to 24/44.1, 95.2% passband 25% phase response no aliasing) > iZotope RX Advanced 2 (mBit+ dither to 16/44.1, ultra noise shaping high dither) > TLH > flac8 > Foobar2000 (tagging)

Quality :
maybe VG+, maybe ex-, I dunno you be the judge...

Notes :
I got to borrow a bunch of a taper buddy's master cassettes and do some digital transfers of them. It'd a good idea to make a good digital archive of your master analog cassettes before something like stray magnetic field from sitting next to a speaker or a TV set erases them, or time and moisture corrodes the bonding agents in the tape and turn them to goo. This is one of his recordings that I've worked on...

I own the microphone that this was recorded with - I bought it from the taper of this show. I can see that it has been repaired several times. It it a Mid-Side (MS) style microphone, meaning that inside it has one directional mic capsule pointing straight forward and one card cap pointing 90 degrees left sideways. Mid-side is supposed to work by adding the front mic with the side mic for the left channel, and subtracting the side mic from the front mic for the right channel. At the time of this show, I believe the internal mid-side circuitry that processes the signal wasn't working, so the master recording sounds kind of strange and wide and phased out with these directional mic capsules that point in odd directions grabbing this surround sound mix inside a giant bubble dome. I don't remember where the taper was sitting, but it almost sounded like the sound was coming from behind him on the master tapes. This remaster is an attempt to make the stereo sound appear to be more like it's in front of you and in correct phase (especially when listening with headphones).

Share for free - don't buy or sell this recording. Don't bother Re-Re-Remastering this recording from this source. This fileset has already been digitally processed, equalized, and mastered. A flat tape transfer might be available as well... If you need to make this into lossy eMPty3 or other file types for your own personal use, please try not to trade it that way! Share the lossless FLAC fileset so others don't get a mixed up mPEE3 copy on a CD and think it's the same thing as lossless. Keep the trade pool clean! Thanks.

EDIT: June 2016.
Time has passed since I first prepared this tape transfer. I waited to share it, thinking I would re-connect with the taper, and post it jointly with him. Sadly, Kevin recently died, and I never had the chance to reconcile with him and continue transferring his master cassettes. Kevin was one of several concert tapers that I knew locally, introduced to me by another taper friend who also ran an electronics repair shop for several decades. Kevin began taping shows in the mid 80's or so, and went through a couple of cheaper portable cassette recorders before obtaining a Sony WM D6C that LeifH12345 bought and now uses sometimes. Kevin was a big blues fan and guitar player, and has good taste in music! I only have a few transfers of the many unknown shows that he recorded, and with his death, the remainder of his concert recordings may never see the light of day. I simply do not know. I hope that one day some of the cassettes find their way into hands that can share them with other fans, in order to try and honour Kevin's legacy. I hope, as a taper myself for 28 years, that my own collection will live on when it's my turn to go beyond. Kevin went too soon, though...

I hadn't yet met Kevin at the time of these shows 22 years ago, but I'm glad we both went together with 50000+ of our closest best friends on this night! Hahaha! I was also recording these two shows. My second night's recording is nowhere near as nice as this one, and starts mid-way through the first set. Kevin's version is pretty much complete and really good for a recording from B.C. Place. I hope you enjoy hearing it now, and think of Kevin a little bit as you listen to his recording. R.I.P. Kevin Davie
