Warren Haynes' "Midnight Southern Jam"
Wetlands
New York, NY
8/5/1993
AKG451s -> ? -> Teac DAP20 (16/48khz master, emphasis ON)
Digital dub from master using Teac DAP20 -> Denon DTR80p
DAT playback: Sony R500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48)
Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. 24 bit file then processed with SOX 14.3.1 (as recommended, keeping the file at 24 bits during the processing) to remove pre-emphasis which was applied by the Teac A>D converter. Volume normalization and fixing a few brief analog dropouts in the left channel by copying over samples from the right channel. Then back to Soundforge for volume normalization and dithering back to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.

Notes:
What's fun about the BARN series for me is that it allows me to take a trip back through my decades of recordings....and any random thought or connection might lead me to some long forgotten treasure. BARN68 is one of those recordings -- what lead me to this particular show was seeing Phish play Little Feat's "Waiting For Columbus" on Halloween 2010 -- while they were busting through a pretty great version of one of my favorite albums, I was struck by the fact that Phish could never *own* the song "Spanish Moon" in the way that Warren Haynes does. (Though, don't knock it until you've heard it, The Radiators really make the song their own too.) So I started thinking about what the definitive version of Warren performing "Spanish Moon", might be, and this incredible show popped into my head.
A little more history about this show: Though I didn't actually attend it myself, I've had this show in my collection for AGES. In fact I specifically recall that REALLY wanted to go to this show, but a midnight-start Wetlands night (which means you would easily be out past 3AM) on a weeknight, there was just no way I could justify being out THAT late on a school night. I mean, we knew it was going to be basically the Allmans onstage at Wetlands (minus Gregg and Dickey) but I just couldn't do it. Well, it was a good thing that Geoff Tischman (who I happened to be working with at the time) did attend. And to top it off, he brought the DAT to me at work the next morning for me to dub right in the office. Sweet -- now that's good service!
In general this is a KICK-ASS Warren-lead jam session -- Warren bringing his favorite people onstage to jam on an off-night in the middle of an Allmans tour, and playing lots and lots of (mostly-blues) covers. Listen for Allen Woody in top form. As is customary, no Wetlands jam session would be complete without a take on Cissy Strut.
And oh, the recording quality is just superb. You're going to love the sound on this thing -- warm and in your face, just like Wetlands was. I had to do some work on it as the levels were very loud for the first song or so and then lowered for the rest of the show (I have corrected this problem completely) and there are a couple (4-5) of brief seconds during "Kansas City" where there was an apparently loose analog cable somewhere in the chain, causing the left channel to drop in and out (and sometimes crackle a bit). For these moments, I have tracked them down and copied the right channel over the left to patch so that the show drops to mono and then back to stereo briefly.
Just searching for info about Sandra Wright lead me to the information that she apparently passed away at the age of 61 on 1/11/2010
Big thanks to Geoff Tischman for getting this one done!
Enjoy!
Scott
