Original Master Recording:  Neumann RSM-191i stereo mic -> Neumann PS -> Teac DA-P20 -> coax digital out -> Denon DTR-80p(master @ 16/48)

DAT playback:  Sony R500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48)

Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter.  24 bit file then processed with SOX 14.3.2 (as recommended, keeping the file at 24 bits during the processing) to remove pre-emphasis which was applied by the Teac A>D converter.  Then back to Soundforge for volume normalization, a bit of clap removal and targeted notch EQ to minimize some screams/whistles during the off-mic tunes; and dithering to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.

BARN78 notes:
Ah...the "good old days" of Phish, when they were "on the way up", trying exciting new things, debuting all of the new (now classic) songs from the Hoist album (which were mostly not being played in public before the album's release) and Phish was a mostly-unknown band to the general public -- back when they could place nice (and good-sounding) venues.

At the time, nothing could have made me happier than seeing Phish at a multi-night stand in one of my favorite venues of all time, in my hometown.  I don't think they were really big enough to truly sell out 3 nights at the Beacon to different -- I think it was the same people who came back night after night!  Back then, Mail Order wasn't as crazy as it is now, though the tickets were highly sought-after.

Anyway, listening to this show -- the first night of the run, you'll get a quick "shake off the dust" Buried > Poor Heart, followed directly by one of their SOLID jam vehicles from back then -- Stash.  And this Stash is no laughing matter -- Mike and Trey lock in with tightly-intertwining lines, and Mike kicks in some cool bass effects at various points during the song.  The new Julius (my first airing of it) rocks out, Trey gives a nod to how great the venue is, and then they proceed into a completely acoustic and *off mic* Ginseng Sullivan which is very tasty.

Opening up the 2nd set with an almost unheard of "blink and you missed it" Faht REALLY rocking out to The Curtain and Sample In a Jar, and then taking things out there for a jam to Reba, things get going very nicely.  A palate-clearing Big Ball Jam proceeds Fee, and a very rare (but appropriate) "Take The A Train" (as many people might very well have taken the "A" Train to the gig that night).  A little Purple Rain is always welcome, and then we get a couple of rockers with an a capella number sandwiched in the middle.

This BARN series is dedicated to the OTHER Scott Bernstein (he of Hidden Track) who had been talking about this run of shows as the 17th anniversary approached.

Mostly I think this sounds very good (thanks to Brendan O'Neill who rented the Neumann stereo mic we used), though the off mic tunes took an inordinate amout of my time massaging them to make them audible!

Also note that there appears to be some sort of issue with Trey's vocal mic in that there is occasionally some distortion when he sings (and when Fishman sings Purple Rain into it as well)

Enjoy!
