Original Master Recording: Neumann RSM-191i stereo mic -> Neumann PS -> Teac DA-P20 -> coax digital out -> Denon DTR-80p(master @ 16/48)
DAT playback: Teac DA-P20 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48)
Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. 24 bit file then processed with SOX 14.3.2 (as recommended, keeping the file at 24 bits during the processing) to remove pre-emphasis which was applied by the Teac A>D converter. Then back to Soundforge for volume normalization, a bit of clap removal and targeted notch EQ to minimize some screams/whistles during the off-mic tunes; and dithering to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.

Note this one took 2 transfers from 2 different playback DAT machines to get a 100% clean transfer. My 1st transfer (through my Sony R500 deck) had random dropouts throughout the 1st set....and my 2nd transfer was totally clean except for a 7 second dropout in Paul & Silas. Luckily my first transfer was clean during that song and I was able to track down the exact samples where the dropouts started and ended, grabbed the missing bit, and now we have a complete show with no dropouts!
BARN80 notes:
Ah the Beacon '94 night you've all been waiting for. This was considered "THE ONE" after the run ended....and people still talk of this show in awe. Well, it holds up very nicely despite being one of the shortest Phish shows I can recall (just about 2 hours). The band comes roaring out of the gate with a hyper-speed Llama, quick Guelah, and an even quicker Paul & Silas before settling into a beautiful Harry Hood (ah how I miss the days before the "Hood!" audience response to the "Harry")...a few more standard rock tunes precede a huge jam on It's Ice before the pretty big set-closing DWD. Set 2 starts with a LONG and jammed out Maze beore a light-hearted If I Could and palate-clearing Oh Kee Pah before the big horn bust-out. Apparently lots of people knew about the horns but I hadn't heard they were on tap, and sure enough, when they lowered Page's piano top, there they were set up on a riser behind the piano! The rest of the set was horn-induced power push through their most popular horn-based tunes, some of the stuff from the then-new album (Hoist) one verse of the uber-rare Alumni Blues (only opportunity I've had to see it live) and the Fishman run through of the Jungle Book song "I Wanna Be Like You" (King Louie's theme). Wow! Again, powerful, very satisfying, but short. None of the tunes once the horns hit had HUGE jams in them, but it was a treat to hear each one and what the horns would do on them.
A few notes: sound-wise there do seem to be some issues with the sound-mix in the venue through at least Guelah if not a little longer. I can't understand by the 3rd night at this venue they wouldn't have had things locked down. Also Trey's mic continues to distort occasionally (you'll hear it as he's introducing the horns and when Fish comes up to sing). The same problem was happening on the first night....so was Paul sleeping on the job or what?
I think this recording is as good as you're going to get out of this show, so I hope you enjoy!
Scott
