08/23/2000 Diana Hamilton Source note: In a KZSU interview from 5/2/87, Dan Healy talked about the new "Matrix"
mix idea of mixing a live mic at the soundboard in with the SBD feed to the FM station.
He added, "You guys [Stanford radio listeners] are the guinea pigs." The pre-FM feed to
KZSU on 5/2 and 5/3/87 was already a SBD/AUD mix. This seed of 5/3/87 is therefore a
"homemade" Matrix mix: 65% Healy SBD/AUD Matrix feed + 35% FOB Schoeps AUD.
08/23/2000 Diana Hamilton Listening notes: I have a 100% Healy Matrix copy of the Frost run on cassette, spun from the station's
preFM copy in 1987 by a DJ there. It makes for an interesting comparison to the current seed.
In the Healy version, the vocals are "normal" and full sounding; the instruments, although clear as in a SBD,
have that more distant "listening from the taper's section" feel. On the current seed from these shns,
the vocals are slightly tinny around the edges. However, the instruments in the homemade mix have
*amazing* presence, as if you are standing right next to them! I'd say that Sean's effort was a
successful experiment. It is hard to say which version I prefer more.
BTW, I would love to see 5/2/87 materialize in SHN as well, in either form. ;)
03/01/2001 Andy I have wanted to raid the KZSU vault for some time now. I really need to talk to my few friends that are DJs, because apparently all the masters are kept pretty locked away. Diana, does that Healy interview from 5/2 exist in any form anywhere out there?
03/01/2001 Diana Hamilton Cassette copies of 5/2,3/87 with filler interviews were treed by the KZSU DJ/interviewer in rec.music.gdead, in summer 1987.
Besides the Healy, there was an upbeat interview with Mickey, and a kind of downbeat one with Bill Graham.

I'm a dead end since we no longer have cass>cass dubbing ability here, nor any cass> digital ability, but maybe some other rmgd old-timer has copies...

04/05/2001 Dead Newbie Please pardon my ignorance, but why is Drums broken into 3 tracks? Space is the same way. I've listened to the show and I don't understand why this was done. Not that it's really important but I'm curious.

04/05/2001 Diana Hamilton A lot of weird tracking I've seen on shows appears to be due to people using "autosplit" software during wav mastering (software puts track points at silent parts).
That might work for traditional CDs but is inappropriate for dynamic live music. I have no personal idea whether that was done here, but it's something to bear in mind.
02/14/2002 Diana Hamilton Dave Cohen made the following comments to BUDD, 1/01: "the 5/3/87 PCMpreFM/PCMAUD was not made on a pcm601es, it was made (both
sources) on Sean Weber-Small's PCMF1s, and the mix is more like 90% PreFM
and 10%aud. Also, there are no dat generations in this recording. It was
done on SawPlus Pro (a multitrack mixing software) directly from Sean's PCM
masters played back on his F1s at 44.056, sample rate converted to 44.1,
mixed, and then burned via CD Architect. If there is a DAT generation, it
came from the discs AFTERWARDS. BTW, these do sound quite nice, the
audience recording quite nicely masks the preFM high end brittleness."

01/10/2003 Greg Yurkovic If you're feeling adventurous, you can fit this show on two audio discs without losing anything. D1T01 through D2T03 (Feels Like A Stranger, which is not listed above) will fit on an 80m CD-R. D2T04 through the encore can fit on an 80m CD-R by overburning the disc
with approx. 1:30 of extra audio. Your mileage may vary so test your burner first!

Alternately, you can get rid of the two tuning tracks from disc 1 and shave off some other audience banter with the .wav editor of your choice. Then D1T01 through D2T04 (Ship of Fools) will fit on the first disc and the rest will fit on the second disc without any overburning. However, then you lose Little Bunny Foo Foo and that's just wrong.

Also, you can use 'shntool join' to cocatenane the 3 Drums tracks into one track, and likewise for the Space tracks.
