This is the 1st show I ever taped, during my 1st couple of days in Burlington. Be forewarned, there are some significant problems with this recording. There are numerous dropouts, as the power cord from the 4-track actually fell out (!) of the Cafe's ancient wall socket several times. The master tapes from this show were stolen from our place on Germain Street during a keg party a couple weeks after the gig. Luckily I had dubbed a copy for a friend, so I wound up with a 2nd gen cassette copy for my own collection. These dubs weren't made on the best equipment, I'm afraid to say. This accounts for the amount of hiss present, and presumably this is why the tape cuts partway thru A-Train. I tried my best to smooth out the drop-outs in audacity ... maybe someone who's really good at this stuff would like to make a project out of improving this recording further?

Some notes on the music: "Tree Fist" is an improvised piece with chords and lyrics shouted out by various audience members. "Kitty Litter Blues" was a generic blues with impromptu lyrics sung by local blues singer Anne Weiss, who was in the audience. Tracks 2 - 5 on disc two also feature Shane Brodie on guitar, dobro and 'bones'.  They closed with 'A-Train', so there isn't much music at all missing.

I sent a copy of the tape to Phish HQ, then still in Lexington Mass, and towards the end of the summer I received a brief thank you note on the back of a postcard from Trey, postmarked in California where the band was recording 'Hoist".  Back at school at Hampshire in September, my friends on Germain Street called one day to say that Jamie Masefield had dropped by looking for me to get his own copy of the tape ... apparently Trey had given him the address. I wound up bringing an early version of the Jazz Mandolin Project down to Hampshire to play in our lounge later that fall. I made road trips up to Burlington periodically during the next year and a half to check out local music, and moved there in June of 1995 after I graduated ... throughout the mid  '90s I was taping as many as 3, 4, even 5 gigs per week in and around Burlington. What a great time to have lived there ... there was amazing music happening almost every night of the week, and back then it seemed like I had all the time in the world to soak it all in. Glad y'all are enjoying the stuff I've been transferring and seeding, i certainly enjoyed taping it all!
