Recording Notes:

This is a fresh transfer (02/2014) from my DAT Master, which was a digital D8 patch (Oade Coax SPDIF) into someone’s rig.  Jim R. hooked me up with the patch, since the Taper’s pit was packed and I was late.  Then something was going on with the rigs, and I got switched to another patch.  Where I ended up with (according to what I wrote down that night) was the KM184s->V2->AD1000.   I missed the first 3 songs (Blind Man In The Dark, Lay Your Burden Down, Thorazine Shuffle).

12 years later, I do a DAT Transfer from my old Tascam DA-20 MKII, and there were obviously some further issues in the taper pit, so big thanks to whoever was scrambling around in there dealing with it all, I’m sure things got a little hairy.  My first set starts at 48 KHz for the first few seconds, then abruptly switches to a 44.1 KHz sampling rate for the remainder.  The second set starts out at 48 KHz then, somehow, switches to 44.1 KHz again during World Gone Wild, then back to 48 KHz right after Norwegian Wood during Mule for the rest of the show.  I have no idea what was going on.  There appears to be only one other source for this, listed as Schoeps MK21H/MK8 -> VMS02iB -> Apogee AD500E.  That source appears to have had issues as well, most of which were fixed, some patched using an unknown source (maybe the Neumanns?).  Interesting, the prior a drop out during Blue Radio which seems to correspond to a drop out in this recording. – which would have been the 44.1 KHz source.  So whether I was being switched between those two rigs, or what I don’t know.  I’m guessing the 48KHz source was the Neumanns and the 44.1KHz the Schoeps, but I don’t really know.

The way my soundcard locks onto the SPDIF sample rate, I had to record each different segment separately, down sample the 48 KHz pieces to 44.1 KHz (In R8Brain), then reassemble all the pieces.  So this file set is missing the first three songs, and there are a couple of splices in the second set, due to the sampling rate change issues, but otherwise a pretty great sounding recording (IMHO).

Allen Woody died on August 25, 2000.  It was a huge loss for the music world, and I’m sure Warren and Matt were devastated (along with other family, friends and fans).  Warren and Matt finished up 2000 with the acoustic “Smile At Half Mast” tour.  We didn’t know what would become of the Mule, I just knew I’d never be getting my ass kicked in the Woodshed again.  (Phil and Dave Schools have their respective Zones, Allen had the Woodshed).

March of 2001 saw the “New School of Gov’t Mule” emerge – most of the initial shows took place south of the Mason Dixon, but in May they made it up to the Northeast – Pittsburgh, DC, Philly, NY, Providence, and they closed the tour with this show in Boston.  The future was still uncertain (Chuck & Schools were clearly temporary) but I left this show feeling confident the Mule would soldier on.
