Oldneumanntapr Notes-
This recording came to me in the mid 1990s from Mike Johnson, the Dean of Students at Morro Bay High School. I was referred to Mike by another friend who told me that since we were both deadhead tape collectors that we should meet up. Mike showed me a box of reels that he had, mostly FMs and some soundboards of the Dead from the 70s. The tape that caught my eye however was this Kingfish recording from Los Gatos in 1974. He said that he got his copy direct from the soundman at the Chateau Liberté, who was a friend of his. He even showed me the note from the soundman, which was still folded in the reel box that said ‘Don’t let this out!’ (It is unclear if the source for this recording was the house soundman for the club or the person who ran the remote truck, but it would seem to be the person who ran the master reel as his was clearly marked as a 1st-gen copy.) Mike told me that he thought enough years had gone by that it was OK to share it now, so I borrowed his small box of reels, this tape included, to copy at home. My friend Bill Gaines, of Bill Gaines Audio, lent me his TEAC X-1000R 10” reel-to-reel deck and I copied the reels directly to my Tascam DA-30. This was recorded in a remote sound truck and apparently the master tape was paused between some songs. This show was also recorded by Ed Pearlstein, who mastered the show with his own reel deck plugged into the remote sound truck. One interesting note is that the order of the song titles in set two do NOT match what is listed in the Etree database, but there is a notation to this effect in the text file posted to Etree for Ed Pearlstein’s copy, which was the same order. The possibility also exists that this recording is a 1st-reel copy of Ed Pearlstein’s recording, though I have lost contact with Mike and cannot verify this. There is a bit of print through on this recording that is audible in places, because of the age of the reel tape.
