============================================================================
Via the good ol internet I discovered that the Veterans Memorial Coliseum was imploded in 2007. Those old New England cities had those concrete monsters for arenas and even back then some of them were ancient, built probably in the 40's or 50's post WWII era. Every time I went there it just always seemed to be hollow ,no spirit or soul, and for this particular GD run, the cops surrounding the building were over the top. We arrived late on night 1 and I didn't get in but I had found a ticket for this night 2. Security was so tight we were only able to get in one deck so this copy was from a first generation off of Tom's master. I remember the venue feeling HUGE and when you ventured out into the hallways there were heads everywhere, smiling and spinning.
The Scarlet Fire is very slow and deliberate with the interlude heading into Fire having a mellow spaciness. Brent messes up Saint of Circumstance harmony by coming in early and Jerry goes "Hey" during a very feisty version which sounds like they were having fun. Bob used to love playing that song he put so much energy into it. The Drums & Space intro is out of control Mickey craziness; he had some bells set up on a rack like tibetan prayer bowls, but bells, and proceeded to make a wild ending of drums leading to some jerry led space.Billy wails on some low Tom Toms leading into the Other One so listening back all these years later I can only conclude the drummers had some new toys or were feeling fine this evening as they put on a SHOW.
I remember heading back to Syracuse after the show and stopping at some rest area, probably Mass Pike, and getting out to see deadheads everywhere. Some in the McDonalds, some sleeping in their cars, just seemed like a lot of folks headed West quite a ways from New Haven. Those drives home headed West early in the morning toward Syracuse were often so exhausting. Thanks to whomever created the NYS rest areas with their 24 hour gas stations and large rest rooms. Deadheads could camp in one of those rest rooms until time to head to the next show!
