the tour story:
Going from Portland to Worcester after hanging out for a day in Portland the travel wasn't terrible. We showed up in town late afternoon and headed to the downtown area checked out the coliseum and located a hotel we could get one room for what would turn out to be more than a few deadheads. Sean got volunteered to drive Chris' brother Matt to this show as Chris had to work. You can hear some talking between the tapers at points along the recording. A mystery I couldn't solve is why or how we missed the first two songs with the Beyers and the same questions as to why neither Chris nor I can locate a master or a first gen of the binaural. Somehow the tapes which were in my possession had wound up with the entire show.
The Bertha > Greatest is thumping out of the gate with Bob a bit raspy on vocals from a long tour. For some reason I really like this Tennessee Jed, very mellow and well thought out. Healy really had Jerry's vocal dialed in for the almost 10 minute long Row Jimmy, you can hear the reverb mixing with the cavernous space perfectly. Bobby's vocal in Looks Like Rain also featured some Healy wizardry which Bob worked a bit into a great climax echo'ing his vocals off the building while Phil hammered the low end likely physically shaking the building.
The start of the second set the sound quality is off a bit, the vocals in Help on the Way being weak. Phil is slamming the low strings on the Modulus six string though and you can hear the crowd's approval throughout with an especially warm ovation at the end. An Energetic Samson and Delilah preceded a delicious Eyes of the World. The Spanish Jam out of space is quite developed although it seems to lead away from The Other One a bit until Phil reinforces to Bobby he wanted to play the tune this night- the bus came by and we got on. The Spanish Jam also featured Brent's digital sampling as with the previous few shows this time doing bird chirps and other space noises alongside Mickey. This was a proper Spanish Jam lasting almost five minutes including an interlude of Maleguena style flourishes. More Healy vocal antics on Bob's other One last verse vocals. What sounds like an aborted start to all Along the Watchtower morphs onto a Good Lovin' closer.
