the tour story:
We had a doozy throw down at the hotel we were at. Too many of us were in one room and we got challenged by security but somehow remained allowed in the building. There must have been 8-10 of us which was the first time most of us hung out and partied together for an extended show run.  I recall having about 4 D5's copying tapes while also having to preserve D cell batteries to get through the night. I also recall meeting several friends of Greg and Tom's who would be part of their crew most times we saw the Dead on the East coast. The Centrum was one of those classic concrete venues typically used for college hockey, basketball, the circus, concerts and sales conventions. It was not full of amenities, no where near close to what concert goers expect at modern arenas. It was a bit sweaty and had basic concessions but it was not an unwelcoming building.

This show had some standouts of "typical" tunes; pay attention to the C.C. Rider and Cumberland Blues. Although there is some cutting high end on Bobby's slide solo. This was one of my first live Promised Land's and I was so happy to get it. The 30 minute Scarlet > Fire is complete with Bobby doing slide guitar sweeps during the spacey parts and has some really sweet Garcia soloing. There is some crazy jamming out of Playin' as if Bobby discovered his effects boxes for the first time. Then the drums continued the moment with Mickey on the new balaphone leading into a great space with everyone contributing. Bobby had some tune going through space and Jerry slides into Truckin' in a very playful manner, it seems the band was in good spirits and having a good time on this night.
