the tour story:
I was at my girlfriend Fran's sisters wedding in Binghamton for this show which also featured the Band opening for the Dead. Yup, you got it, the show in my college town, the town where all my original Grateful Dead friends lived I missed. Had to do it, the wedding had been planned long before the Dead shows.  After seeing 34 shows in 1983 and nine shows on this tour I was unable to see my hometown show. The plan was someone would leave tickets for me in case I could make it up early enough to catch part of the show. We had planned quite a party for our deadhead friends and I was going to be there for sure with the show tickets a sidelight. Of course we were late arriving from Binghamton and the guy who gave me a ride wanted to drive right back and it was 10 PM so I chose to not walk across campus for the second set and just wait to party.

The show seems like it had some moments. The Shakedown Street opener sounds slightly tired, as they must have been after 11 shows in 16 days.  It always puts a smile on my face when they do a Candyman. The Birdsong features some Brent digital keyboard tones. I'm sure the short first set was of concern to the audience but was probably a result of having The Band run a bit late. A nice China > Rider through Terrapin with Phil and Healy taking advantage of the room adding some nice bass tones. The Bobby and drummers after Terrapin really caught my attention; for about five minutes they just jam along just the three of them.
