(OldNeumanntapr) Taper Notes-
I left my house shortly before sun up and drove up to Laguna Seca from SLO County. I was the first car into the lots that morning and again, MAJOR hassle from security getting equipment in to record. I missed a couple of the early sets while I was waiting for the OK from the Allman Brothers. I thought I would get a Great place to record from, being first in, but Little did I know that the security staff didn't understand that the event was open to taping, so I had to wait until they figured that out. I met up with my friend Jim Ho and his girlfriend at the show and he sent her inside with a blanket to hold us a spot. Once again, we weren't given the OK until the Allman Brothers arrived in their bus. Thankfully Kirk West straightened them out. When they actually let us in with the recording equipment I had missed the 1st band of the day completely. We ended up getting a spot almost directly in front of the board. I overheard someone say that they were broadcasting the show off of the board with a low-power transmitter, so I thought I'd try running a matrix of my Nakamichi CM-300s w/CP-4 shotgun capsules with the FM feed, mixed with my Boss BX-4 four-channel mixer. The recording was good, except the vocals came out a little echoey, because of the matrix. I bought a poster of this show, which was a two-day event billed as 'Laguna Seca Daze,' plus I got a good deal on an Allman Brothers T-shirt that was last-years model. I remember before the Allmans came on there was a little old white haired lady who saw my mic stand and came over to me and said, in a southern drawl, ‘Are y’all here to see the ‘Brothers?’ I felt like being a smart ass and saying, ‘Na, I’m going home after this set’, but I wasn’t that mean. She wanted a tape, and I sent her one later. Blues Traveller and Shawn Colvin were two of the opening sets that day. I recorded Blues Traveller, but we were still stuck outside waiting for the OK on taping and I wasn’t able to record Shawn Colvin, who I had never seen before. As I remember, The Allman Brothers Headlined on 5/29/93 and Phish headlined on 5/30/93, but etree lists the Phish set as being also on 5/29/93. I believe that is incorrect, as I would have recorded them too and I have no Phish master from that day. Since I only had a ticket for Saturday I drove back home after the day's shows were over. I still have the poster for this show, but my D5 master was lost years ago. I wasn’t happy with the echo from the matrix mics, so I upgraded later when I found a DAT. Unfortunately, the taper recorded the show onto a 60 meter (2hr) DAT tape and the last two songs were cut off.
