Sean had flown home from the Greeks and borrowed Tom's M88's and flew back out with John Hance via People's Express into San Fransico. They rented a white Camaro, got a motel near the fairgrounds, hung out with the Cali crew including Aaron. They drove to Stinson Beach along the way. These recordings are fine, especially given the typical windy conditions at the fairgrounds.

At start of set 1 'Shakedown Street' has odd vocal issues , Healy was dialing in the PA. They resolved by about 1:05. About 7:40 Brent throws down a refrain and then a hopped up solo. 'Althea', 'Me & My Uncle' > 'Mexicali' features great vocal tones by Bobby and Jerry, with some tasty Jerry leads; you can almost feel the salt coming off the ocean caressing the microphones. The mid first set 'China > Rider' features Phil's booming bass and some serious Jerry vocals/leads. 'Looks Like Rain' has that "perfection Bobby"- true of voice, true of spirit. ;-)

Set 2 starts with a hard driving 'Cold Rain & Snow', second set Cold Rain's were always a Sean favorite. Jerry and Bobby are screaming the chorus with the wind swirling around this AUD recording has that "right there" feel at this point. Brent's 'Far From Me' follows in an also unusual slot, second tune in second set; they ended abruptly and took abouot 3 seconds for Bob to hit the opening notes of Truckin'. The crowd must have been thinking it was opposite day by this point in the set as neither of these three opening tunes were typically placed in those slots. In the middle of Truckin these dudes came parasailing down over the water and one landed close to the backstage area, you can hear the crowd's reaction starting about 2:30 into the tune. A fun 'Truckin' gives way to an 'Eyes of the World' in a typical slot, pre-drums, but following Truckin' was not it's usual pairing.

I have to admit I edited this Space into 'The Other One' liberally as there is a full 3 minutes of the track before they start the "official" beginning to the tune. They slam through the 'Stella Blue' and 'Around & Around' heading into another somewhat oddly placed Saturday Night. Rather than play it for the encore, they ended the set with it. It WAS a Saturday, but in that time frame the band was playing 'Touch of Gray' almost every three shows in the encore slot, so the choices make sense even when they don't make sense. A true Grateful Dead methodology at work!
