Sean and Gary drove to California from Virginia in the Datsun 240Z carrying the Nakamichi 550, Chris' Binaural mics with the dummy head, Butch, and in possession of no tickets. They crashed at Aaron's house and had quite the hustle to get tickets for Halloween and the last 2 nights. This was the first night of the 3 shows they recorded. Sean figured they would get the lay of the land and let the local tapers work it. He and Gary sat front row balcony, and you can certainly hear the channel discrepancies due to the mics being worn on Sean's head as opposed to on the dummy head.
The first set has many oddities recording wise, none of them positive. At times the image shifts from left to right and back, but not in any timed pattern. Sean believes this was the cause of using grey market tapes, which could be borne out by the second set which does not sound to me like it has that flaw. Another flaw in set 1 is during Little Red Rooster,( and a few times during BEW & Cassidy) some sort of distortion type noise repeats throughout the entire track. It isn't heard on any other parts of the tape I assume it was self noise of the mic cable rubbing along the ear or head as the cable and pre-amp were the weak links to those mics. The sound quality picks up for Let it Grow with Phil's bass being much more natural.
Set 2 is much better sound quality wise and merits listening by itself for this reason. The omni mics pick up Phil's bass tone vibrating off the walls much more realistically than other mics might. Although the vocals at the start are low, the Scarlet > Fire is sweet over headphones picking up those subtle low Lesh tones and hot Bobby chords underneath the Jerry vocals and solos. Listen closely to the drumming, Mickey's cymbal work and Billy's snare drum panache are evident in this version.
