the tour story:
After four days in San Francisco with two rooms and about 10 people we were raging and ready for this night! The Argyle hotel management was surely happy to see us spend so much time off premises that day. They moved the tapers from the left corner, slightly in front and beside the soundboard;  both for  the volleyball players space, and the eventual Midnight entrance by Bill Graham. Of course, we didn't know until it happened that Bill was going to be traveling from the back of the venue on guidewires in a cart designed as a lightning bolt dressed as father time. BGP bluecoats told us they had to keep the path underneath the travel of the cart "free of objects" such as mic stands.

I begin with this anectdote to say that we had to scramble to locate a spot to record in as the amount of space in the OTS was almost zero by the time we arrived (later than usual). So JJ helped me get a patch from his friend Eddie Claridge, a long time taper who had a front row balcony spot with Sennheiser 421's XY clamped to the rail. We arranged for me to meet back up for the tape flips and left my rig with Eddie and went down to the floor to hang with our crew. GD New Years eve crowds were a combination of drunk, drugged out and costumed up, mainly attempting to have serious fun. It turned out we were underneath Bill Graham as he passed by the left of the soundboard headed to the stage as father time sitting in a lightning bolt carriage. The second set stroke of Midnight was followed by a third set of four songs which was a nice bonus for the evening's music. It was a long night, ending about 2 AM.

One thing I wish to note. These shows were the first where I noticed a specific approach to have "alternative" food and snacks available out on the main concourse. Before these shows, maybe at some Cal Expo shows you might see a vending booth or two set up in the corner away from the main concessions. At these shows BGP had set up booths at each corner of the 3 main corners of the venue selling carrot cake, vegan brownies, juices and non caffeinated beverages. This seemed to be an early stage toward the evolution of official show concessions and vending to include more vendors and food or clothing choices which were directly created by deadheads.

Best Scarlet===>Fire of the 80's
"Hands down!! The transition jam between the 2 is spookey and dark. The shows were over shadowed by the saddness of big Steves wife and daughter tragically passing in an auto accident in Marin.

In Parrish's book he says all Jerry could say to him was "Do some of my heroin, It will kill the pain" : (

And you really hear Garcia's pain in the jam between Scarlet and Fire. The tone of the guitar is amazing going thru many differnt sounds from scarey, angry, sad, happy, high and the emotion in Jer's vocals still give me chills."

From archive.org "gonearethedays" AUG 23 2004
"Listen to Baby Blue
I was at this show. After Parrish's loss the show was played with a huge wreath by the stage. The 3rd set and particularly this version of Baby Blue are excellent.

Jerry's normally emotional voice took on added feeling in some of the lines from Baby Blue. I thought at the time he was singing it for Steve."
