the tour story:
We decided to hang in Portland for the daze between having several freinds in town and completely worn down from the five shows so far. On our way down from Portland we were in a caravan of three vehicles and Sean's bread van gave out near Boxborough MA. We had Matt Kidwell in the car as well as Eric and Gary and Mikey were in the van. We had to stagger to take turns getting everyone into my 1984 Honda as I drove down to Providence and back to Boxborough bringing Sean and many possessions down with us on my second trip to Providence that day. Luckily, Greg had reserved two rooms at the Marriott and we had a destination. Sean and Gary's story should add to this, but iirc he ultimately left that van in Boxborough never to go back and get it. The hotel story is one for the ages, but suffice to say we should have been kicked out by security at 3 AM when they knocked on the door and we had about ten people in the room. Greg and Tom talked them out of it and told them we would be quiet.
At the time, in context of being on tour and comparing night to night, this show felt good but nothing astounding like the Portland shows. Listening back, aside from a pedestrian setlist, some sweet musical moments occurred. The Sugaree had sweet Jerry solos, the Down in the Bottom/Ain't Superstitious was a tasty, bluesy treat. Jerry and Phil really supported Bobby's vocals on that one. The whole set was solid and intentionally played by the boys. The Let it Grow set closer was one of those when you could almost feel the wind and rain gathering on the edge of town, some heavy instrumental runs were thrown down by the boys.
A pretty solid Terrapin opened the second set in an unusual position and got a thorough workout with the drummers accenting the jamming, especially Mickey's cymbal work. Jerry growled his way through the Ship of Fools, even ending with a slight focus to the vocals. On this tape, someone screams "Let Phil Sing" just before Truckin;. The band starts off tentatively but sails hard into the wind up changes: "Lately it occurs to me...", Jerry was just WAILING on the outro solo. Bobby ends up going into a Spoonful as opposed to the band walking offstage for space. They do this crazy space riffing at the end of Throwing Stones before the last verse, then Jerry starts to play Sugar Mags while Bobby is singing Ashes Ashes, then Jerry sings Ashes Ashes while playing Sugar Mags chords! Amazing Grateful Dead mindfuck! A thunderous Sunshine Daydream punctuated the night. A solid, if not great Grateful Dead show.
