the tour story:
Opening night in Philly on a Saturday. The crowd was ready to go and talking about all the unusual breakoits and song placements during the tour. Of course, they play a relatively "straight up" Grateful Dead show! The Feels like a Stranger has some spacey jams while the sound got dialed in nicely by its end. Duprees Diamond Blues was nicely presented with Jerry dancing his melotron triplets in the solos. The Big River was the set piece with great interplay between all instruments. Of all the songs in their repertoire to jam out on, Big River seems the least likely, although Kris Kristofferson has opined the Johnny Cash penned tune is the best ever written "Rock n Roll Song" not just a country song. I admit to being biased as a fan of this tune by any artist, but this version is noteworthy.
They started second set with a nicely constructed China > Rider which had the Saturday Night crowd dancing and smiling. The classic Dead continued as they drove into an introspective Playing in the Band > Uncle John's Band, the interplay between Phil and Bobby then Jerry on these two tunes is punctuated with Phil's six string attack. The drums and space clock in at almost 30 minutes! The segue between Thtowing Stones and Not fade Away had another "crossover" between Jerry and Phil who started playing Not Fade Away while Bobby chanted the final 12 bars of "Ashes, Ashes". This was a similar treatment of the Throwing stones outro transition as they did in Providence 1985-04-03 melting into Sugar Magnolia that date. This NFA features forgotten vocals as the crowd and Bobby laugh about it. Brent makes an atypical vocal appearance at the end of NFA, and the band end it in a strange down tempo manner with a Rock Star ending. One More Saturday Night rocked us out into the night. I daresay Philadelphia was electric that evening, with hot pretzels and cold beverages being sold in the parking lot and the smell of those tin charcoal burners accompanied us across the lot to the Hilton.
