the tour story:
Second night in the city of brotherly shove. GA shows in Philadelphia were brutal on the bones and legs of the blockers as well as tickling one's inner self protective shields. Being 50 to 60 feet from the stage can make it seem like the entire audience has to go near you to go toward the stage. One reviewer on archive.org calls this the greatest 6 song set ever, "which sounds ridiculous"; and it does, but it might have been. ;-)

The show opened with Phil at the mic bellowing " HI Kids, Hiya, Hiya, Kids...CAN YOU HEAR Me?" then stepping up to his own microphone proceeded to bellow "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?" sharing vocals along with Brent and stumping us yet one more night. I'm certain no one was throwing out that tune as the opener pre-show! OF course the Jerry tunes are marked by his froggy, 1985 spring tour voice. HE pushes a short but well played Mississippi Half-Step with the band warming up behind him. It seemed they didn't have an ending or segue ready so they sort of slow walked themselves into a bluesy C.C. Rider. The lengthy Birdsong and Dancin' in the Streets pairing continued the mellow yet musically pleasing set with Garcia really pumping his guitar perhaps making up for his obviously shot vocals. Bobby asks "Have you ever wondered if you will remember the chords?" at the start of Dancin' evoking cheers from the crowd before they heard the opening notes.

Second set is a solid performance even with all the end of tour vocal issues. This Sunday show is often overshadowed by the next night's tour closing show opening with three barely played cover songs. Shakedown Street led into a drum driven Samson with Bobby shaking the timbers and with the obvious age of the venue, one might wonder whether we could tear this ol' building down. The She Belongs to Me was a solid performance although probably not as remarkable as the Providence reading. I admit to a certain fascinatiion about this tune during the 1985 timeframe when they played it nine times and never again. It also seems in retrospect that the Dead must have been preparing for their 1986-87 run with Bob Dylan breaking out some of their favorite Dylan tunes such as Tom Thumb's Blues, and this one. The rest of the set is solid with a notable stop at the Smokestack Lightning > Morning Dew choices. This Smokestack was more spacey than the Nassau Coliseum March 28th Matthew Kelly version, which led into this very mellow Morning Dew. The Morning Dew had not been played all spring tour, Tom had been calling for the Dew ever since Portland and we finally got one!
