the tour story:
I flew up to Albany and my grandparents house, met Kenny where they gave me a ride to the show and dropped me back in Schenectady as they continued on to Hershey and we all met up at Merriweather and Sean's house. My favorite moment of the show was when Phil and Bobby yelled at the dude to get off the balcony. I had decided to go and check out my pavilion ticket seat to look for SU friends at about that same time. I had made it past the first row of security but was stuck on the side near the left hand pavilion entrance and was about to head out and toward the balcony ramp when they stopped playing and the ridicule began. Having had Bobby tell the old joke about how does the dog smell, we all laughed, loosened up a bit and had a grand time at that extremely crowded amphitheatre.

First set had some excellent moments highlighted by the "Crazy Fingers" ** and "High Time"++. Each tune was rare enough, but first set slots for either were very rare historically, and the last time a Crazy Fingers had been in the first set was 9-21-1982. After High Time they must have had a serious front line breakdown as they took a solid 5 minutes to start back into the set closers "Hell in a Bucket" > "Don't Ease Me In".

Set two: The "Feels Like A Stranger" opener got the evening moving into overdrive followed by the mellowing, but oddly upbeat "Eyes of the World". GDTRFB is "spirited" almost sounds fast but the vocals are on pitch, the drums are almost double timeing Jerry's lead. The space into "Truckin'" was nice, and a laid back rendition was thrown at us - "New York, got the Ways and Means". This bounced into a playful "Spoonful". This tape cuts at this transition so we get Black Peter at the very beginning. Jerry sings a nice one with Healy messing with the tone during the vocals. They followed with a bouncy "Lovelight" and serenaded the 40,000 who overran the New York State park that day out of SPAC with a two song encore. Onward to Hershey the troupe went.

** There were only ten Crazy Fingers played in 1985; until April 1985, the last time played had been OCT 1983. None of the rest were first set slots.
++ There were only five High Time played in 1985. Three of which were first set slots.
