the tour story:
Being the night following an incredible weekend at famed Merriweather Post Pavilion and that we had been staying with Sean, we got a late start to the day and arrived at the venue relatively late for us, but before doors. At this point we were traveling in three vehicles, Mike's VW Van, Sean's Car, and Tom's Car. We had decided no hotel would be needed as we had to head toward Texas for some to get home and some of us were supposed to continue on to Ventura CA for shows 11 days from this date. I recall the venue as almost like the Philadelphia Civic Center, and Deadbase shows that these were the first Pittsburgh shows since 1981.
The show was well played, with a strong first set and the usual end of tour vocal roughness for both Jerry and Bob. They did seem to have been having some equipment problems as they stopped several times in the first set working on the gear. After the tune up "Jack Straw" Jerry delivered a gorgeous, unrushed, "It Must Have Been the Roses" with pretty soloing. From there the cowboy tunes made an appearance wth the "Cassidy" & "Big Railroad Blues" sequence being my listening back highlight. The "Promised Land" closer is thumping with Phil kickin the low end of that not so new any longer 6 string bass.
The second set begins with a slightly jammed out "Women Are Smarter", and an oddly placed "Crazy Fingers". Once Bobby gets into the "Lost Sailor" transition into "Saint of Circumstance" they seem to gel so well they led into a "Terrapin Station" show highlight. Jerry and Brent carry the tune into some serious heights. The space into "Wharf Rat" is short while teh song itself is as long of one as I think I ever heard. They closed out the show with a "Lovelight" then treated us to another two song encore, "Revolution" and "Brokedown Palace". The Tuesday night crowd was energized and the crew went our separate ways as Mike and I drove in his van wuth Tom and Lynne following down to Texas trying to make the Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic in Austin. Sean drove back to McLean, we were to see him later in that summer at the August/September Texas shows.
