the tour story:
So the Dead were headed to Texas for the first time since 1983 and having just moved back to Texas in October 1984 I thought this was amazing. All the Texas deadheads and friends of deadheads started preparing by sending in for GDTS tickets. As the dates got closer of course the usual schedules had to be tweaked and some could not attend all of the three shows we had set out as "our tour"- Houston, Austin, Oklahoma City. This Houston show was at an amphitheatre inside of Astroworld about 30 minutes north of downtown making it less drive time for us DFW heads. The ticket price included a day at the amusument park which if I recall we missed due to Friday travel schedules.
This late summer tour we attempted staying within the confines of the OTS (official Tapers Section), so in this typical amphitheatre they put the OTS behind the soundboard area on the lawn just behind the concrete space at the rear of the pavilion. We went up the hill a bit further and wound up on the lower middle of the hill, basically DFC. A great crew was with us including Tom and Lynn from Syracuse, Kevin and Lori Terry, Eric, John Goode, and Phil from DFW, Mike and Kenny and surely others. The idea was to leave from the show to Mike's place in Austin where we had quite the party arranged.
The show itself featured two short sets, somewhat typical for 1985, with the first set clocking in at barely 50 minutes. I'm going to say that for a six song set there were still some great moments. The Birdsong would be my personal highlight. It also has Brent or Bob Bralove doing MIDI sounds of birds chirping and such during the song. The set closes with a Looks Like Rain and Deal featuring classic '85 Dead, Garcia ripping leads and the boys following with great interplay but scratchy vocals.
Second set had a paradigm shift with "Touch of Grey" played after "Scarlet Begonias" instead of the usual "Fire On the Mountain". They played the transition into Touch in a slightly comedic way, with Jerry teasing Fire and Brent hitting the first organ chords for Fire, then Jerry turning a corner quickly and jumping into Touch. It took Bobby and Brent about 16 bars to change their tone controls from the Fire settings and start playing Touch with the other four! The band left the stage after only three songs lasting only 23.5 minutes before drums. A long drums and space follows and Phil insists on the "Gimme Gimme Some Lovin" which Brent and he do a decent, if a bit unsynchronized, job on the vocals. This leads to the previously teased "the Wheel" and bubbles up into an "the Other One" gaining steam but almost too quickly then "Morning Dew" crops up out of nowhere at the end of the Other One and is such a beautiful version. The encore of Sugar Magnolia was very surprising and of course had everyone dancing. On to Austin!
