The tour story:
We had a day in between to get out of Austin up to Arlington leaving some people at home and picking up a few others for the drive. Driving to OKC from DFW is a straight shot up I-35 then getting to the Zoo took just a few turns off the highway. Another hot day would find us celebrating the Dead's 20th year by being at this venue which the boys played at three times. This was a Monday show with Kansas City the next day and Red Rocks THU through SAT of that week. Jerry wore a red T Shirt while Bobby featured his short shorts to combat the Oklahoma heat. Trouble ahead Jerry in Red!
The first set was punchy and fraught with equipment problems, mostly from Phil's bass rig. At one point you can hear the speakers fry and the crowd roar from Phil and Harry's antics while getting it fixed (or turned off). I always love a good "Bertha", but here "the Greatest Story Ever Told" shines, although you can hear the Phil pharts from his soon to be fried speaker. The "West L.A. Fadeaway" was lengthy and bluesy with the boys hitting on all cylinders. They then led us through a combination of two cowboy tunes and two New Orleans tunes with the "Stagger Lee", "Iko-Iko" being the set highlights. Iko-Iko had us dancing and smiling with Jerry's playful guitar runs as the summer sun was setting. Talking 'bout Hey Now! Brent throws down on Minglewood; after Jerry offers up a searing solo, Brent scat sings then RIPS into a Hammond B3 organ solo with more heat than the Oklahoma sun.
"China Cat Sunflower" comes ripping out of the gate with some serious jamming during the interlude before "I Know You Rider". Brent is prominent in this recording, he along with the drummers accented Garcia's segue solo's then the entire band drove through an on tempo, non rushed "Rider". They must have been having fun (and listening well) as each instrument seems to be keying off the others. Man Smart (Woman Smarter) was often a tune I might fast forward while listening, but not this one. Stylish and syncopated with more tasty Brent playing and singing. A long "Playing in the Band" jam led into some great drums and a space heavily infused with Mickey's BEAM. They closed the set with a standard song run for 1985 but to this listener the "I Need A Miracle" and "China Doll" were well above average. They closed out the longest two set show of their Southwestern late summer tour and the circus got ready to head to Kansas City for the next night.
