The tour story:
Red Rocks brings out an elevated level of human experience. Partly due to it's natural beauty and the magnetic positioning of it's place on Earth. Other parts due to how sonically amazing it can be inside the natural amphitheatre. But when the wind howls and you are recording, you better have decent to great windscreens. The setlist notes for this recording stated "no windscreens". The Beyer M201's were mine so I know there were windscreens at one time. Memory does not inform me as to why we had no windscreens this day. But the recording certainly suffers because of the lack of them. It is unfortunate as the location and Healy's mix were putting some solid vocals and guitars out there. Of course, there is the thing about it being an incredible sounding space!
Ending the shows at 6 PM may not have had the intended effect of slowing down the pandemonium of the traveling fans, but I can assure you it made for a rough wake up the next morning to attempt to be at the park by 8 AM for the doors at noon. We wound up with a closer spot this day tucked behind the soundboard only about 5 feet Right of center. By this year our crew had realized it was best to have one blanket with the tapers and another behind a bit for the rest of the crew. The sound crew must have had some fixing to do overnight because of the previous nights equipment issues. The relatively short six song first set had a few moments, but the heat of that part of the Colorado day probably caused the short set.
The second set was even a bit short if you measure the time of music on tape. But it included a very musical and bouncy "Iko-Iko" with Jerry obviously having fun with it. Following and equipment repair, Bobby got cranky and played "Looks Like Rain" an odd choice for second set, let alone pre-drums. After a mountain afternoon mellow "He's Gone", they buttoned in a "Spoonful", barely keeping Jerry onstage but with some nice interplay between Brent and Bob. The post-drums came out as a very typical Grateful Dead ending with some solid playing. Two Jerry tunes in a row then two Bobby tunes. A great Friday night on the Rocks leaving the crowd out "early" enough to catch sunset on the drive out of the park.
