the tour story:
For this show we benefited from our previous night's experience. This second night in Rochester found us set up on Phil's side about 50 feet left of center and 40 feet from the stage. We did not handhold the C422 this night. We mounted it on a small monopod stand. During the first set we kept the mic about chest/shoulder height to avoid detection; this night what makes the first set much less listenable than the second set was the dude who kept telling us to go to the OTS in the back. After a while, he basically just whistled and screamed 5-6 feet from us. We moved away from him for set 2. There are some sonic moments in the second set which are absolutely delightful. The jamming in Estimated and the brightness of Eyes are memorable. "She Belongs to Me" and "Sugar Magnolia" spotlight Jerry's and Bob's voices while the "Satisfaction" encore is the Grateful Dead at their playful finest!
Set 1- the "Iko-Iko" starts off mellow then builds up the crowd during a Garcia solo and vocal in last verse. Brent riles the crowd up further with his scat singing on "Lil' Red Rooster" followed by some searing Hammond B3 work. They burn up the "Brown Eyed Women". Then Brent pulls out one of his laments, "Baby What You Want Me to Do", even getting Bobby to sing the chorus. (After the song, someone asked the name of the tune as it was new to us, listen closely as people around the mics were guessing incorrectly). Deadbase lists Brent playing that song four times, three times in 1985, this being the final time ever played. It was nice to get a "Jack Straw" at the end of a set or at least not the opening mini-soundcheck slot it usually appeared in. This "Jack Straw" was well played, and evenly paced, truly grabbing the crowd's attention.
Bobby opens the second set telling us, "Ladies and Gentleman Tonight is very special because it is nobody's birthday" then the band swings into "Revolution". After a slight pause, an unexpected "Estimated Prophet" led us to sing the chorus, "California". Bobby even gets in some "scat screaming" near the end with Healy throwing some reverb on his vocal just a bit. Jerry leads the way through "Eyes of the World" with a tired sounding vocal but bouncy guitar. Phil's bass bounced us into "The Other One" out of Space where they quickly went into a frenzied jam which, which after the second verse, devolved into "I Need a Miracle". At the end of Miracle the band sounds as if they have zero idea what to do next when Garcia sneaks into the Bob Dylan tune "She Belongs to Me". Jerry's vocal holds so much emotion as they worked through the tune. A side note for most heads is that the entire summer and fall 1985 tours featured several Dylan tunes because they were obviously, with hindsight, preparing for the 1986 summer run with Dylan and Tom Petty.
We were so crazed at the end of the show Mike and I decided we would lift the 422 as high as I could hold it, while he blinked the green aiming lights at the band as we did so. This was, of course, contrary to the bands' wishes and in the face of the road crew and those who were supposed to "enforce" the tapers being beind the soundboard in the OTS. As the band turned around to start "Satisfaction" I lifted the monopod above my head about 4 feet. Bobby was actually at line level about 50 feet from the microphone at that point. I will NEVER forget the look he gave when he noticed. For about 20-30 sedonds he was singing ans staring at the AKG c422 blinking in his face. Yes, we were THOSE taper guys, part rebel and part jerk, completely all in for the good ol Grateful Dead! [NOTE: this seems to be quite a strong performance of the Rolling Stones tune]
