the tour story
Onward the tour went to the wastelands of Northern New Jersey where security was so tight but all gear got in thanks to the OTS. These two tour ending shows had been highly anticipated by the (North)East Coast heads as that fall 1985 tour was all over the map. It started in Florida then went to Atlanta to the famous Fox Theatre, a Halloween show in South Carolina, up through Richmond VA and finally hitting the Northeast proper for 2 shows in each Worcester, Rochester and East Rutherford. Mike and I were only slated to go to the last four and he had planned on hitting the Kaiser shows later in that month so this was it for me on this run.
In order to carry out our gonzo taping tactics, we ran Mike's AKG stereo mic from in front of the soundboard, the "forbidden zone", so to speak. The gear was setup at Sean and Tom's tour booklet center section seats. We configured the versatile c422 in "crossed bi-directionals" using each capsule in a figure eight pattern crossed X-Y between 60 and 90'. This is not a typical configuration for audience GD recordings but we had been experimenting with it for several shows by that time and felt somewhat comfortable running that way. The rest is up to your ears, I think it has solid quality moments and shaky moments as well.
Set 1:
For this opening night at the Byrne the band didn't truly get groovin' until the "Sugaree" > "Cassidy". Then the underplayed "Stagger Lee" made an appearance. You can always tell Garcia liked singing this tune, and of course the crowd was appreciative. "All over Now" featured Brent's Hammond along with Bobby's vocal antics. They closed the set with a slow, purposeful, and somewhat lengthy "Row Jimmy" followed by the always crowd pleasing "Feel LIke A Stranger".
Set 2:
"Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo" was always a nice way to start a set. Going into "I know You Rider" without its' usual prerequisite "China Cat Sunflower" was unique (Deadbase says 3-31-1973 was previous time Rider was played without China Cat in front of it). The "Playing in the Band" > "Uncle John's Band" sequence had more bounce than usual in my opinion due to the nature of the solo China Cat feeding the band and crowd's energy. They headed into drums with a five minute almost "Supplication" jam with Jerry trying to get Bob to play "Lazy Lightning" to no avail.
During "Truckin" Bob forgets a major line in the middle verse and the crowd reacts with laughter. The drop into "Comes a Time" is greeted with approval by the crowd who then gets pin drop quiet around us. "Around & Around" and "Good Lovin'" were the usual 1985 run throughs. The "It's all over Now Baby Blue" is notable. A nice, long rendition with gorgeous Garcia soloing and Weir lending subtle harmonies to Jerry's plaintive voicings.
