the tour story:
We were warned. "Do not set up here, when the midnight set happens you will get crushed" the Bay area taping veterans told us. We were setting up as discretely as possible just after security cleared out the volleyball court. A couple of Cali crews were about 15 feet closer to the stage and we wound up in the sweet spot almost as a "diversion" from the California crew's spot. When the Bill Graham cake came through being carried like Cleopatra's litter with eight or ten stagehands they threw us aside almost ten feet, we had to grab the stand and bags and were violently swept aside. Of course we were back in place about 45 seconds later!
The sound quality of set one in particular is up front. The "Tons of Steel" and "CC Rider" have so much brightness and vocal clarity. Cassidy is huge. Obviously the PA was in top form for the National radio and TV broadcasts that evening. The "Let it Grow" had some serious jamming throughout. The first set is remarkably devoid of crowd noise. Aaron can be heard at the start of set 2 noting that it was Mike's first NYE show.
For the opening of set 2, Bill Graham, as Father Time, came out on a giant Birthday cake carried by multiple stagehands. They then did a gag onstage as Ken Kesey was the baby and we all sang Happy Birthday. After the balloons drop, the sound quality of set 2 gets markedly better. The "Sugaree" is rollicking but the "Ship Of Fools" is superior. A spacey "Playing in the Band" leads into the shortest Terrapin Station ever, then to a drums and space which gets cut on this version. At the end if the set, after "Not Fade Away", you can hear the band go offstage, then the drummers get back on and start hitting the NFA beat so the band continues the tune for about 90 seconds. Then they play "Lovelight" much to the crowd's delight. At it's end they go offstage again. Most people thought the show was over as the house lights had come on, however the band came on about 6 minutes later for a "Brokedown Palace". Most of the tapers had already started taking mics down and missed the tune, as had we. The Brokedown on here is borrowed from D5Scott's Sennheiser 421 FOB recording.
After "Lovelight" you can hear Aaron and Mike discussing my absence for most of the end of set 2. The crowd was so tight 50 feet from the stage with the gear I bailed at some point. Mike can be heard saying he was standing off to the side and couldn't possibly have made it into the throng around our rig. Listening back years later makes me appreciate the cameraderie we all shared in our part of the GD community. Taking a step further back, and thinking of all the various groups of friends and communities who were fans of the band, I am so grateful for those times. The band and their fans impacted each other in so many ways, thank goodness the Grateful Dead existed.
