the tour story:
For the final two shows of this East Coast shows, the band chose Hartford CT. As is well chronicled, the boys were beat by the end of the tour, Jerry's voice and energy were on autopilot. The talk of the crowd between sets was about the "Supplication Jam" > "Let it Grow", or more specifically why they didn't play the whole "Lazy Lightning" anymore.
Any set which started with Iko-Iko was always going to be a winner in my mind. By this time in 1986, they had played with the Neville Brothers enough to be singing the genuine NOLA lyrics, not the words they sang in the late 1970's when they started playing the tune (May 15, 1977 first time played). Autopilot or not, the Peggy-O featured some brilliant Phil lead bass overtaking Jerry's inability to play the lead but valiantly sang the lead. "Birdsong" is a highlight with Bob singing some and Brent playing piano trills behind Jerry's barely existent guitar. "Supplication Jam" > "Let it Grow" closed this very spacey, Jerry lite first set. Bobby just wouldn't go into Lazy Lightning, Jerry and Phil handed it to him on a silver platter and Bob just whoosh, started "Let it Grow".
set2
A very short "Uncle John's Band" in which Jerry forgets the order of the verses.
An almost Jerryless "Playin' In The Band" goes fifteen minutes then devolves into a Jerry less Brent "Don't need Love" which gets rowdy at the end. Phil does a run on bass lead throughout the entire "Other One" while the drummers just pounded away and then Bobby unleashed a crescendo of feedback half way through. Somehow Jerry remembers 98% of the words for "Wharf Rat" laying out two lengthy solo segments. Bobby closes the set with "Not Fade Away" complete with falsetto screams. The crowd hung in there with the NFA chant for 2 plus minutes before he encore and start it again AFTER "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"!! Somehow, Jerry rips through the encore with strong vocals for the last night of the tour.
