the tour story:
For the final show we went to the meat and potatoes as JJ called it, about 75 feet from the stage, maybe 30 feet in front of the soundboard riser. As these were reserved seating shows, I'm pretty sure we bought the tickets from a scalper. Then we put the AKG c422 on a stand in Blumlein mode, crossed figure 8 patterns. It appears we ran them straight into the Sony TC-D5M's as opposed to the Nakaminchi 550 we used as a mic master earlier in the tour.
For this specific show, "Jack Straw" gets a bit better than typical opener status with a nice, lazy, "we are just getting started" feel to it. "Direwolf" and "CC Rider" were short but tight and sweet with some Brent Hammond B3 craftiness on "CC Rider". "Candyman" was a pure Jerry highlight. His vocal phrasing was nice with Bob adding some harmony. "Crazy Fingers"! In the first set, a most unusual slot for an already rare tune. Deadbase says 4 were played in 1986 and this was the first one of the year. Of course, final show of the tour an all, Jerry flubs the lyrics in the first verse and teh crowd gives sort of a Bronx cheer when he starts the lyric again. They even play an outro jam as they would for a second set version sequeing into "Greatest Story Ever Told".
Second set opener, "Touch of Grey", led into a Healy infused Bobby vocal delay sequence during "Looks Like Rain". A very rough voice Jerry soldiered through "He's Gone" which led into probably one of the most tentative beginnings of "Smokestack Lightning" I ever heard ("izzat Spoonful, Nobody's Fault, what izzit?"). in 1986, they didn't jam it out as long as they once had, but throwing out Smokestack was a nice treat for the faithful on this last night of the East coast tour. "The Wheel" dropped out of space rather abruptly, Phil and Jerry traded off leads playing a trippy intro. They played a nice, band version of Wheel with all three guys singing the vocals. Then surprisingly Jerry headed into "Stella Blue" and treated it with such tender vocal and guitar lines as Phil landed some truly gut smacking bass lines. "Throwing Stones" led into an extremely short "Turn On Your Lovelight". Continuing the Spring '86 tour theme, the boys returned and played "Box of Rain" for the encore.
