notes: It is possible the mic master was shn ID's:119544 & 119543 Mr. Darby, although they list theirs with a 421 mix. Those ID's are first set only, so if it is the same configuration, here is set 2. Obviously by summer 1986 numerous Nakamichi 300's were being run in the OTS, so I cannot verify this 100%.

the tour story:
Cal Expo is a great venue on the campus of California State University situated on part of the interior valley known defining Sacramento. It is basically in the valley between the two mountain ranges which define North Central California, hence the town further North named Grass Valley. It can get hot in Sacramento. Often in May. I loved that venue for the Grateful Dead. It was outdoors, but small, and in 1986 still only had wooden bleachers on two sides of the stage with a dusty bowl for the floor. This was like a second home to the Bill Graham Presents team and often you would see Bill stalking the grassy area on the sides of the stage just behind the barricades.
Kenny and Mike drove out for these shows in the VW Van with Stella the dog and arrived late, unable to meet up with Aaron and his crew. Therefore they patched out of some Nakamichi 300's located at the OTS. There are some minor issues affecting the sound quality, but overall this recording is very consistent. You can hear some wind crop up occasionally as that venue could get breezy.
For this show, all of the 1986 markers get hit. The first set featured the Kentucky Derby day "Race is On", a beautiful "High Time", and to my ears, a smokin rendition of "Beat It On Down The Line". The second set is top notch playing, especially compared to the East coast tour. That set was certainly short. The four songs pre-drums were just over 30 minutes but the post drums with only 3 songs and no encore was a bit atypical, even for 1986. The transition between Scarlet and Fire was so slow and unforced "west coast style", as we called it then. The weird certainly goes to the reason given by both Phil and Bob from the stage, that Jerrys amp had frozen, and Phil said, "Jerry's speakers are totally frozen, his guitar is broken, and my mind is blown, so I don't think we are going to do an encore tonight, we'll see you tomorrow!"
