^  There is massive bass distortion at start of Saturday Night, then until they dial it in, there is random Phil bomb distortion. The sound starts to get solid around China-Rider
++  At the segue between China > Rider the master tape was flipped, so we spliced it putting the entire suite onto side two during the first generation copying in 1986. It is a bit whooshy at the splice for about 3 seconds and then a distinct change in sound quality results.

the tour story:
Cal Expo is a great venue on the campus of California State University situated on part of the interior valley known defining Sacramento. It is basically in the valley between the two mountain ranges which define North Central California, hence the town further North named Grass Valley. It can get hot in Sacramento. Often in May. I loved that venue for the Grateful Dead. It was outdoors, but small, and in 1986 still only had wooden bleachers on two sides of the stage with a dusty bowl for the floor. This was like a second home to the Bill Graham Presents team and often you would see Bill stalking the grassy area on the sides of the stage just behind the barricades.

Kenny and Mike drove out for these shows in the VW Van with Stella the dog and met up with Aaron and his crew. For this show, they wound up setting the AKG c422 up next to their crew FOB way up close to the stage. You can hear the vocals almost "blowing by" the microphones at times. The crowd is at points very quiet, and other points, talkative. Bob opened up saying, "we're going to play last night's encore", as they launched onto the "One More Saturday Night" on a Sunday afternoon(the showtime was 2 PM). The Half-Step starts the juices flowing as Jerry and Brent played off of each other. Brent joins Bobby on vocals for "Lil' Red Rooster" giving the tune that bluesy barroom flavor. Healy has it dialed in by that point. "Candyman" had a nice, slow swing to it with Phil's bass licks were practically singing the melody under the vocals. Bobby flubs the intro to "Me and My Uncle" resulting in laughter from the crowd. The pace of China > Rider was led by a bouyant Phil bouncing all around under Jerry's leads and topped by the drummers shimmying on the cymbals.

"Gimme Gimme Some Lovin'" starts off the second set with a bang and then they do an odd pre-drums thing and play only one more song, "Playing in The Band". They play it for about five minutes then do this ten minute long "Jam" including some sweet interplay between all six players. Drums and Space led nicely into "Uncle John's Band" which developed into a full fledge Grateful Dead songfest replete with a "Playin' in the Band (reprise)", "I need a Miracle" (Weir messes up lyrics at start of Miracle) into a splendid "Wharf Rat". They finished the set with a short "Good Lovin" featuring a Bobby rap which includes references to the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster which had happened the week before.
