the tour story:
This show holds some solid memories for me. Fran and I flew into Cleveland and drove down to Akron in a rented car, of which there is a parking lot story after the show. We were to meet up with Eddie and Lori Wahba to stay at their place in Cleveland that night. Mike and Kenny as well as Tom and Lynn were also there. Tom ran his Beyer M88's and the Davis brothers ran the AKG C422. Since Bob Dylan & Tom Petty opened for this show playing about 2 hours and 15 minutes, the Dead's portion of the show was cut a bit short. Part of the history of audience recordings of this show is that the crew came down and asked the tapers not to set up for Dylan/Petty. There apparently were very few mic stands allowed or snuck inside as both sets of executive crew mics were handheld even for the Grateful Dead sets.
And, yes, of course, we have a complete version of the Dylan/Petty show. That can be available by request via private transfer. After playing a long show with his backup singers and the Heartbreakers Dylan still decided to show up onstage with the Dead for three tunes, although He really did not do much during Rooster. The funny part was when they started "Its' All Over Now Baby Blue" Dylan and Weir were obviously playing in different keys, and out of sync vocally. After the first line, Dylan stepped back, walked toward Weir and looked at the chords he was playing, smiled a bit, then went back to the mic all prepped to play on the same key. No matter, it was surely the worst Baby Blue I ever heard the band sing! It sort of proves a point that musicians can be the best in the world, but when it comes to playing on someone else's stage, you have to be ready to play!
This wasn't the greatest song selection nor the best Dead show I ever was at, however, it had some odd positive energy. Maybe the airfield just behind the stage, the huge tire manufacturing plant behind one of the bleachers or the strange thick tarp on the field ostensibly protecting some playing field. the tarp amplified the blazing sun that day making it very hot where we were on the floor. Tom and Mike wound up about 10 feet right and 20 feet in front of the soundboard for the Dylan show, and Tom pushed about 20 feet forward with the Beyer's for the Dead's sets.
Garcia left stage during "Desolation Row" for some reason. Years later we would find out the diabetes was keeping him from staying on stage as long as typical. The "China Cat Sunflower" > "I Know You Rider" > "Playing in the Band" before it was short but well played. The Drums > Space sequence was a bit lengthy and the "Truckin'" > "Black Peter" > Sugar Magnolia was certainly tight if not a bit short. After the rest of the blazing summer day on this short Dylan/Dead tour it may have been merciful for us in the audience to finish up when they did.
Fran and I had the craziest time locating our rental car after the show. We had parked in this HUGE field off to the East of the Rubber Bowl, rushing to get into the show to locate Eddie and Tom and the rest of our crew we truly had no idea what the car looked like and what color it was! After spending all day in the hot sun and consuming plenty of head bending libations we could not remember anything at all about that rental car! We wandered that field for at least an hour then some security guys came up on a cart and wound up helping us find the car based on its' description on the keychain! After about 90 minutes of searching, we wound up behind the traffic jam leaving Columbus to head back to Eddie's in Cleveland.
