Notes
The tape cover for cassette 1 lists Contact as the start of Set 2 and the tape cover for Set 2 lists Anelope as the Encore.
The taper sometimes put the Encore at the end of Cassette 1 if space was running low on Cassette 2. However, he also started Set 2 on cassette 1 if there was still plenty of room.
Listening to the tapes, it is clear that Contact is the Encore and Antelope ends the 2nd set.

There is some low level tape hiss/PA white noise that is on the masters...this did get amplified somewhat because of the level changes made durring the show. The levels for the channels were also more than 4db "off-center". I tried as best as I could by making the appropiate gain changes and EQ adjustments to "center" the recording. The X-Noise process was used on this show, as an experiment on just how far I could push it, because it is an "adaptave" process when you have it set up correctly. I decided to see just how much I could try to get the highs as *crystal* as possible without introducing so much noise that it became unbearable. All the fades were done in a montage as 2 seperate stereo tracks. While I did try to adjust the hard volume fades on the master, not all could be properly adjusted and were just left as is.

As for Disc 1, Track 7.....you'll have to ask them what they were thinking ;-)

11/05/2003 A. Davis extras for this fileset are available for download
11/11/2003 brad does anyone know why the sets are backwards on this seed. in the phish companion, the sets are the other way around. and at the end of whipping post, trey even says "welcome to the second set"....anyone?
11/11/2003 Mr. Marmar Ahh...but as you listen to the show....you'll notice something strange at the end of the "documented" sets..Lizards is "Don't go away, we'll be right back" (an odd thing to say before an encore huh?), and Antelope "We'll see you next time" (an odd thing to say to end the first set huh?)..the endings are reversed then....Also, find me some shows that have and Henrietta songs in the 1st set in the years of 89-91.....
11/11/2003 jb LOL. I think we've stumbled on a conspiracy, ala Cornell 5/8/77. Was this show another CIA ruse?
11/12/2003 Matt Unrealistic, but

what if it was a 3 set show?
11/12/2003 Mr. Marmar One thing to take into consideration is that bands like WSP, ARU were opening MANY shows for Phish at this time as well.....as a matter of fact, 2 nites later WSP did just that. I'd be willing to bet that when Trey makes reference to it being the "2nd set" he's implying the opening act as being the "1st set" and Phish's 1st set as being the "2nd set".
11/13/2003 A. Davis we discussed this before deciding to see the fileset as it is listed here.

eventually we decided to go with what was on the tape covers. what are available for viewing at the link in my first post.
03/06/2004 Weave As part of the Old School Phish Project, I have been scanning the tape covers, ticket stubs (if I have them) and the "Phish Update" newsletters (if I have them).

If you are interested, you can find them here:
http://guyforget.net/phishteam/oldschool_extras/

Each show has it's own folder. All the shows released so far are out there.
I've also included the MD5s and TXT files.

If you distribute these SHNs, please include these extras.

You can visit this forum for comments made during the transfer/mastering/listening process:

Each show has it's own thread
06/02/2004 Weave From comments posted in the Bit Torrent of this show at bt.etree.org:

?Highway to Hell ended the set. Antelope and Contact were 2 separate encores.?

As you can see from the tape covers:
http://guyforget.net/phishteam/oldschool_extras/ph1990-05-04/

Contact was placed at the end of the 1st set?s tape and labeled Set 2. Antelope is at the end of the 2nd set tape and is labeled ?encore?. But these tape labels were written out from scribbles on the back of the tape labels weeks after the show.

Contact is obviously an encore and not the start of set 2. It was placed at the end of Set 1 because there was more room on that tape. John must have had the time to swap out the cassette between Antelope and Contact.

I just dug out the archived unmastered WAVs and looked at them in Wavelab. It does appear that Highway to Hell ended the 2nd set and Antelope was the 1st Encore.

At the end of Highway to Hell, the band does not way anything, and the tape rolls. The tape is paused 13 ? seconds after the last note from Highway to Hell. From the foot stomping of the crowd before the tape was paused, I?d say the band left the stage. The recording restarts just before a couple of tuning notes. This seems like Redmond restarted the recording after the band came back on the stage. I doubt that he would have paused the tape if the band was still on stage.

At the end of Antelope, Trey says ?Thank You, see you guys next time? and the tape was stopped 5 seconds later.

Now for Contact? After Lizards at the end of Set 1, Trey says ?Thank You. We?ll be right back. Please don?t go away.? and the tape is stopped 5 seconds later, obviously the end of Set 1. Then there is an 11 second blank gap and the recording starts just in time to catch the first few notes of Contact. At the end of Contact, while other band members are still holding the ?abode? note, Trey says ?Thank You? then I?m not sure who says ?Thank you very much? and Trey says ?What a bunch of hand wavers? and the recording stops 8 seconds later. From the whistling and other crowd noise, I would say that was the end of the show.

Now if we go by the tape covers, Contact started Set 2 and Antelope was the encore. It is right that Antelope was an encore, but Contact must be an encore as well based on the way the song ends.

My guess is that Redmond stopped the tape after Antelope and took it out of the deck when the band left the stage. When the band came back on stage for another Encore, he saw that tape 1 had more room, so he put the 2nd encore at the end of tape 1.

He often would put the encore at the end of the 1st set. It?s hard to tell tho, sometimes he would put the start of set 2 on the end of the 1st tape if there were lots of room. I think the tape got mislabeled as Set 2 stating with Contact when the label was transcribed from the notes written at the show.

So? I would have to agree that Antelope was the 1st encore, the band left the stage and came back for a 2nd Encore, Contact.
11/16/2004 Tim Leavy The reason Trey says "Welcome to the second set" at the beginning of the first set is because they didn't get to play a 2nd set at the prior Keene show due to the fire alarm activation and subsequent closing of the building between sets. It was kind of a mutating joke as the night went along.
