SuneilKumar: Are Mike and Stone's guitars in the left and right channels respectively? I know that's taking it to an extreme, but I want to know how good of an audience recording this is, and I trust your word that it's better than the sbd. Everyone, check out the recorder used http://www.coffeysound.com/store/sonytcd10.html -Suneil Spacedvest: Suneil, First off, many people seem to use the word "soundboard" and "Monkeywrench FM" interchangably, which is the furthest thing from the truth. The MWFMs are mono FMs...granted, they sound great, but they are not really what I would call a true digital soundboard without any kind of compression. This recording is awesome, and if you listen to it side by side to the MWFM, you will hear an incredible difference. You can also hear the difference I am talking about in this very source...the intro is straight from the MWFM broadcast, and then when the band starts playing it blends into the AUD source and you hear the sound gets better. Maybe Leehro can post more on the subject when he sees this thread...I believe he did try and mix this AUD with the MWFM, and it came out subpar to just using the MWFM. I also forgot to say that this is totally new...Leehro got the master and then remastered it and patched the intro in, there is not any extractions in the lineage. Leehro: If you've got a digital soundboard DAT of this show, please share. My contention is that this tape sounded better than the mono MWFM source (which is the same thing spaced said in the original post). I have FIVE DATs of this show on my desk, and several different CDR copies. I did the legwork to get good DAT recordings of the broadcast, as well as this master. This has been in the works since last summer. First off, the FM broadcast was mono. so this tape will have more separation in the channels than the FM tape will, if only because it was recorded with two microphones. Second, the FM tape did not sound as good. FM just can't compete with a rig like this, in a location like this. I did try and mix them, EQing the individual sources to bring out the best from both, and there were NO frequency bands of the MWFM source that sounded better than the km184 tape. So i EQed this tape a little bit to bring up the midrange and high end. Even the midrange/high end on the FM source was okay, but had hiss from the broadcast. I don't believe in mixing for the sake of mixing. mixing the FM in wouldn't have done anything but flatten the recording and narrow any stereo image it has. |
